Job Summary

The laboratory technician senior is responsible for supporting the Physical Science department by obtaining, organizing, preparing, setting up and maintaining laboratory materials for astronomy, geology, physics, and physical sciences courses. The technician is responsible for ensuring that all materials are in good repair and appropriately provided on time to the instructors during the academic year. Receives, maintains and inventories supplies and equipment; establishes and maintains equipment maintenance and inventory records. Analyzes requirements for supplies and initiates the purchase of equipment; contacts vendors for specific equipment information. Adheres to and ensures compliance with applicable policies and procedure.

Essential Functions

30% - Supports laboratory programs and initiates lab set-ups and take-downs for physics, astronomy, geology and physical science courses through coordination with appropriate faculty;

30% - Maintains, stores, and inventories supplies and equipment, including the development and update of lab set up sheets;

15% - Performs routine cleaning of labs & supplies as necessary;

10% - Analyzes requirements for supplies and initiates the purchase of equipment;

10% - Provides work direction to student or temporary workers;

5% - Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited institution and two years of experience such as providing assistance to students in an instructional setting; and/or preparing, maintaining and delivering equipment, supplies or other related instructional materials used for laboratory activities in the area of assignment.

An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience as described above sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation, may be considered.

Desired Qualifications

A.Two (2) years or more of experience preparing college-level laboratories;

B. Prior coursework in astronomy, geology and/or physics. Please list coursework on resume;

C. Experience working with supervisor and/or other staff members to coordinate projects to meet deadlines;

D. Excellent written communication skills as evidenced in a cover letter and/or resume;

E. Two (2) years or more using Microsoft Office or the Google Suite working with documents and spreadsheets;

F. Experience with inventory management, such as monitoring, purchasing and/or receiving of lab supplies.

Special Working Conditions

  • Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
  • Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the human body.
  • Working Conditions: Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gasses, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood or other body fluids); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or threatening environment); and moderate exposure to extreme temperatures or intense noise.
