We are a in need of a Boat Captain (Marine projects) in Dublin, VA (Blacksburg/Christiansburg/Radford area) and Baltimore, M. Must be willing to travel and work 12-hour shifts with an extended work schedule.

*Boat Operator in Dublin, VA - No credentials needed, ability to run 26ft boats.

**Tug Boat Captain in Baltimore, MD. See credentials required below.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Steer and operate vessel.
  • Set course for towing.
  • Inspect vessel to ensure safety.
  • Direct and coordinate activities of the crew.
  • Assign watches.
  • Ensure appropriate tonnage for type of vessel being operated.
  • Proficient in the use of GPS and chart plotters.
  • Must be competent in navigations, seamanship and towing operations.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Conduct training and drills such as firefighting, man overboard, abandon ship, etc.
  • Maintain log of daily activities and vessel movements.
  • Keep up to date all required publications such as Light List, Coastal Pilot, Code of Federal Regulations, Rules of the Road, navigational charts, etc.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY (Tug Boat Captain)

This position must possess managerial and leadership skills.

  • Supervises crew of up to 4: engineer, mate, and deckhands or laborers.
  • Demonstrates the ability to multitask.
  • Possesses strong leadership and command skills.
  • Ability to direct the day to day operations of the vessel.
  • Coordinates the onboard activities of the crew.
  • Assign watches.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outdoor weather conditions on a vessel. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and talk or hear. The employee must regularly work or walk on uneven ground or onboard floating equipment. Access and egress to barges, boats and piers requires ability to do so from moving surfaces due to water motion. Must have good vision and hearing for details at close range or in the distance.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Minimum 3 years of experience as a Captain with comparable responsibilities.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS (Tug Boat Captain)

Minimum 200 ton Master License (Inland or higher) 200 ton Master of Towing Vessel endorsement Radar Observer endorsement

Expected base pay range for Boat Operator: $30.00/hr - $40.00/hr

Expected base pay range for Tug Boat Captain w/ credentials: $40.00/hr - $55.00/hr

This compensation range is specific to the job level and takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to: education, experience, licensure, certifications, geographic location, and internal equity. The range has been created in good faith based on information known to Kokosing at the time of the posting. Compensation decisions are dependent on the circumstances of each case. This salary range does not include any potential incentive pay or benefits, however, such information will be provided separately when appropriate.
