Posting Summary |
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Medical Services Assistant for the Neurosurgery Clinic at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
The Medical Services Assistant performs administrative and clinical tasks as assigned to support effective and efficient office operations.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Advises patients regarding preparation of necessary forms, counsels patients regarding paperwork requirements.
- Obtains pre-certification and /or prior authorization from insurance companies for patient management as assigned, including surgical authorizations.
- Handles physician and professional staff EMR and other correspondence to physicians, patients, and other providers.
- Monitor's patient flow and communicates with any issues or problems that arise with the clinical staff; seeks assistance from clinical staff when communication back to the waiting room is needed.
- Complete scheduling process for surgeries, including but not limited to booking surgical case, notifying representatives, supplying codes provided by physician and departmental billing coder, scheduling PAT and COVID appointments as well as associated preoperative radiological studies. Coordinate preoperative bloodwork and clearances with patient care team physicians. Communicate any barriers to this process with the physician and APP team in a timely manner.
- Complete disability paperwork and all paperwork related to the needs of a surgical or disabled patient under the direction of the physician and APP team in a timely manner.
- Provides continuity of care through various modes of communication (telephone, mail, fax and EMR) with patient, referring doctors, physicians, and other care team members.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Meets the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners definition of a "certified medical assistant" as outlined in NJAC 13:35-6.4(a)2.
- At least one (1) year of relevant experience required, preferably in a medical office setting.

- Certified Medical Assistant.

- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- The ability to function in a team environment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment |
- Physical Demands: Position requires standing, walking, sitting, use of the hands to finger, handle or feel, talk and hear 2/3 of the time, reach with hands and arms over 1/3 of the time, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl under 1/3 of the time. Position requires lifting 1/3 of the time up to 10 pounds, and under 1/3 of the time up to 25 pounds.
- Work Environment: Moderate noise environment with some exposure (less than 1/3 of the time) to blood borne pathogens requiring the use of personal protective equipment; some potential exposure (less than 1/3 of the time) to hazardous waste.
