Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.

Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Laboratory Technician for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. This is a full-time, twelve-month position to oversee laboratory activities and facilitate research in the laboratory of Tess Stahl, Ph.D.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Carries out and facilitates research in ruminant nutrition and lactation biology, as well as general laboratory management.
  • Responsible for the preparation of reagents, performing laboratory experiments and feed analysis, as well as organization of lab records, and maintenance of laboratory equipment, in consultation with the Principal Investigator and department administration.
  • Provides professional level laboratory technical support duties involving the application of scientific research methods and techniques.
  • Performs multistage purifications, other assays, and tests; propagates non-animal specimens and cell cultures; prepares tissues, chemicals, and/or living subjects for testing; may conduct breeding of small animals; and performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience

  • Requires a high school/vocational school education or equivalent with coursework completed in the relevant science area(s) and one year of research study experience.
  • An equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience.

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires a practical understanding and a working knowledge of basic scientific techniques.
  • Requires the ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal skills, and computer literacy, including proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree is preferred. Ruminant handling and care experience is also preferred. Bookkeeping aptitude is desirable.
  • Self-motivated and enthusiastic.
  • Moderate work hour flexibility (occasional weekend or evening work).
  • Prior experience in all or some of the following: livestock feed analysis (DM, ADF, and NDF). Experience training undergraduate or graduate students in basic laboratory techniques.

Equipment Utilized

  • General laboratory equipment -centrifuges, pH meters, balances, microscopes, feed fiber analyzer, artificial rumen incubator (DaisyII).
  • Microsoft Office - Word, PowerPoint, Excel; software (i.e. CurveExpert Basic) to create nonlinear regression curves; SAS software for statistical analysis.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • If ruminant experience is had by the applicant, there is a potential need to assist with lifting offspring and moving/weighing ruminant animals.

Special Conditions

  • Regular workweek may include evening and/or weekend work.
