The Department of Public Health Sciences in the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia (UVA), in collaboration with the Brain Institute, seeksone tenure-track faculty member (open rank)whose focus is on utilizing inclusive approaches to reduce disparities and promote health equity within the general area of neuroscience research. This is part of a major Grand Challenges research investment by UVA and the School of Medicine in Neurosciences. In June 2022, theUniversity announceda commitment to invest more than $75 million in an interdisciplinary effort to pioneer life-changing advances in neuroscience while simultaneously mapping the workings of the human brain. This push will help scientists better understand perplexing neurological conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and autism, as well as how the brain functions over the lifespan.

Candidates should address contemporary problems in neurosciences generally through public health research addressing health equity and social determinants of health. Areas of research interest include, but are not limited to, big data approaches to understand disparities related to neurodevelopment, neurodegenerative diseases, or stroke; and community-engaged interventions focusing on health equity with respect to any of these broad neuroscience areas.

The candidate will be expected to:



  • Develop and maintain an active, extramurally funded research program in public health and health equity in the neurosciences.
  • Demonstrate a track record of productivity and peer reviewed biomedical and/or public health research.
  • Contribute to the Brain Institute in health equity research, educational and training pipelines, and community outreach and engagement initiatives.
  • Train and mentor students in public health and health equity research.


Anticipated effort:Research 80%, teaching 10%, service 10%

The tenure-track faculty member will have a primary appointment in the Department of Public Health Sciences and will also have prominent roles in both the Brain Institute. The Department of Public Health Sciences provides leadership and excellence in innovative research, education, and community engagement strategies to advance clinical care, patient outcomes, and population health. With more than 50 primary-appointed faculty, PHS plays a unique role in leading and fostering collaborative research and education across the School of Medicine, UVA, and the community at large. PHS faculty have a wide range of expertise, from biostatistics, epidemiology and informatics to economics, systems engineering, public health, evaluation, and health policy. PHS faculty lead and/or collaborate on clinical and population health research topics ranging from clinical trials, clinical outcomes, comparative effectiveness, clinical quality, health services, prevention, health policy, and health equity research.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. and/or M.D. in public health or any of the Public Health disciplines (including but not limited to epidemiology, biostatistics, health behavior, or health policy), or any other related discipline (Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Medical Anthropology, Implementation Science, Genomics, etc.). Candidates must have demonstrated the capacity to develop and/or maintain a high-quality independent research program.
