PROGRAM AREA: Aquatics

JOB TITLE: Aqua Fitness Instructor

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Part-time seasonal

STARTING HOURLY RATE: $21.00 (OR $35.00 for CERTIFIED Zumba Instructor)

JOB SUMMARY:

Aquatic Fitness Instructors are responsible for providing a safe and friendly pool experience for members of the community at varying ability levels. Course options include: Aqua Boot Camp, Aqua Zumba, Aqua-natal, Cardio Splash, Deep Water Aerobics, Water Aerobics, and YoQua. Effective instructors will maintain a positive and responsible demeanor and challenge participants to reach fitness goals. The instructor will promote physical fitness to class participants and encourage students to attend fitness classes on a regular basis.

As of November 1, 2021, all MPS employees are required to be fully vaccinated. The health and safety of our staff and students is our number one priority. As a result, all offers of employment are contingent on the candidate showing proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (currently one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine) to pass the pre-employment requirements. Individuals with medical issues or sincerely held religious beliefs that prevent them from getting the vaccine may request an accommodation from the vaccine requirement.

POSITION SUMMARY:

  • Provide challenging, yet appropriate workouts for varying groups of community member participants.
  • Use inspiring, positive language to cue your classes for instruction, motivation and proper technique.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with co-workers and supervisory staff.
  • Design creative workouts that motivate your students to visit you week after week.
  • Share patron concerns and needs with supervisor or building staff when necessary.
  • Maintain a professional appearance by always being in uniform and keeping the facility clean and organized.
  • Select music for your classes that inspires fitness but remains free of political, religious or vulgar language/lyrics.
  • Be punctual. Alert building staff if you anticipate being tardy.
  • Report for all assigned shifts and be proactive in finding replacements when needed.
  • Be prepared for each workout you deliver during a scheduled session.
  • Make an effort to get to know your participants and build a sense of community.
  • Maintain current certification in American Red Cross CPR and AED.
  • Attend and fully participate in Aqua-Fitness workshops provided by Milwaukee Recreation on a seasonal basis.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Hold current American Red Cross CPR/AED certification.
  • Able to meet the scheduling needs for this position
  • Access to reliable transportation

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Exercise experience - especially in water preferred.
  • Previous employment/volunteer work that included training or teaching fitness preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Possess a fabulous attitude that will motivate your students to exercise.
  • Ability to communicate well with patrons and co-workers.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of students based on age and ability.
  • Be familiar with posture, technique and kinesiology of exercise as to prevent injury.
  • AEA or ACE certification a plus.
  • Maintain professionalism while on duty.

Contributes as a team member in a recreational atmosphere which is friendly, cooperative, motivating and professional.
