PROGRAM AREA: Aquatics

JOB TITLE: Swim Coach

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Part-time seasonal

STARTING HOURLY RATE: $16.00 (YOUTH) - $17.00 (ADULT)

HOURS PER WEEK: 5-20

JOB SUMMARY:

Swim Coaches are responsible for providing a safe and friendly competitive swim experience for age-group swimmers of novice - advanced ability levels. Coaches should maintain a positive and responsible demeanor at all times, and challenge swimmers to reach new goals in the water. The coach will promote a sense of teamwork to youth and triumph in effort applied to competition during both wins and losses.

As of November 1, 2021, all MPS employees are required to be fully vaccinated. The health and safety of our staff and students is our number one priority. As a result, all offers of employment are contingent on the candidate showing proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (currently one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine) to pass the pre-employment requirements. Individuals with medical issues or sincerely held religious beliefs that prevent them from getting the vaccine may request an accommodation from the vaccine requirement.

POSITION SUMMARY:

  • Teach stroke technique for all 4 individual events of swimming.
  • Use student-appropriate language to accommodate a wide array of ages, backgrounds and ability levels.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with parents and co-workers.
  • Assign reasonable workouts to your swimmers that align with ability levels and promote teamwork.
  • Share patron concerns and needs with supervisor or building staff when necessary.
  • Maintain a professional appearance by always being in uniform and keeping the facility clean and organized.
  • Enforce all pool rules in a consistent and fair manner.
  • Be punctual. Alert building staff if you anticipate being tardy.
  • Report for all assigned shifts and be proactive in finding replacements when needed.
  • Be an authority figure at your facility and work to create a safe and fun environment for others.
  • Be prepared for each practice and swim meet you run during a scheduled session.
  • Make an effort to get to know your swimmers and build relationships.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • American Red Cross Certification in Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, First-aid recommended
  • Able to meet the scheduling needs for this position
  • Access to reliable transportation

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Swim team experience or coaching experience preferred
  • Previous employment/volunteer work with youth/families in team sports preferred.
  • Previous or current experience as a lifeguard a plus.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Possess swim ability that may be used for demonstration to your students.
  • Ability to communicate well with patrons and co-workers.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of students based on age and ability.
  • Possess knowledge relating to head injury and concussion prevention.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional during emergency situations.
  • Maintain professionalism while on duty.
