Transporter- Part Time 2nd Shift

Major Responsibilities:
  • Transporters are responsible for providing and maintaining a safe environment for themselves, the patient, and their co-workers by following established policies and procedures.
    • 1)Contact telemetry at time of move and completion.
    • 2)Be able to complete CPR if needed.
    • 3)Attends department, hospital and Advocate educations and meetings.
    • 4)Uses correct body mechanics/lifting techniques when transferring patients. Obtains transfer assistance as needed.
    • 5)Cleans soiled equipment after each use to avoid spread of disease. Completes more thorough cleaning as needed.
    • 6)Demonstrates knowledge of the cognitive and sensory needs and abilities of pediatric and geriatric patients as revealed through departmental competency assessment activities and applies this knowledge when giving instructions, explanations to these patients as revealed by direct observation and patient feedback.
    • 7)Uses proper three patient identifier for patient safety. Reports safety hazards to management
    • 8)Follows Bloodbourne Pathogens, Infection Control , and universal Precaution Policies. Washes hands and wears PPE appropriately. Follows Dress Code.
  • Care of Environment
    • 1)Stocks supplies, linens, etc. daily. Orders supplies as necessary. Retrieves physical beds as appropriate and delivers them to the designated OR suites
    • 2)Cleans patient carts and PACU bedside monitoring equipment in a timely and comprehensive manner.
    • 3)Maintains a clean and orderly environment that is welcoming and convenient to customers.
  • Work assignments are to be completed as efficiently as possible by the transporter in order to meet the workload demands and better accommodate patient needs and additional requests for service. Properly performs patient transports.
    • 1)Follows oxygen usage guidelines as set by the hospital.
    • 2)Communicates problems related to the patient's condition to the nurse.
    • 3)Prepares the patient for transport while waiting for nursing assistance. Receives hand off from the nurse to ensure safe patient transport.
    • 4)Works independently and utilizes the appropriate resources to maintain efficient operations.
    • 5)Assist co-workers with lifting patients and provides any other help to make the transport safe and efficient.
    • 6)Assures that all PACU Phase I documents are present in the patient's chart prior to transporting them from PACU.
  • Transporters will assists the patient/guest with service issues/problems by providing excellent customer service through established guest service techniques. Serves as a resource to patients, family members, and other hospital personnel. Maintains courtesy and a professional demeanor.
    • 1)Inquires if the patient needs any assistance of additional comfort measures. Uses age appropriate measures. Offers extra blankets, pillows/comfort measures as needed.
    • 2)Appropriately greets the patient and/or guest. Knocks on door prior to entering.
    • 3)Consistently uses AIDET; appropriately introducing him/herself to the patient, explaining the purpose for their interaction and the patient's intended destination. Appropriately converses with tehpatient during the transportation phase providing a friendly atmosphere, recognizing the needs and behavior of a variety of age groups.
    • 4)Provides the patient/guest directions and if necessary takes the individual to the desired destination.
    • 5)Refers the patient/guest on to the appropriate personnel who can be of more assistance and help resolve the given situation.
    • 6)Familiar with all locations of the hospital and campus.
    • 7)Converses with patients and guests and provides a friendly atmosphere to keep the patient's spirits up.
    • 8)Accompanies the patient at all times. Hands off patient appropriately.
  • Transporter has the ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently for the benefit and comfort of the patient. Identifies broken equipment and removes it from circulation.
    • 1)Uses and maintains equipment in proper operating order.
    • 2)Notifies management of safety issues related to equipment. Aware of the potential risks and safety hazards from the use of the equipment.
    • 3)Identifies any broken piece of equipment used by the Transportation Department and labels it for repair.
    • 4)Completes training and demonstrates skills in operating a wheelchair, bed, and cart, safely and efficiently according to established policies and procedures.
    • 5)Cleans soiled equipment with approved cleaning solution for continued use with other patients.
    • 6)Utilizes communication tools appropriately and communicates to dispatchers and healthcare providers to update status and information.
  • Work assignments are documented with all the necessary information as accurately as possible. Documentation is compiled and necessary for future departmental reference, problem/conflict resolution, and necessary for process improvement methods.
    • 1)Adheres to schedules, breaks, and lunch periods.
    • 2)Reports safety events and near misses in any instance of patient or personal injury.
  • Patient information is kept confidential and the patient's right to privacy is acknowledged and respected.
    • 1)Follows all confidentiality policies and procedures of the hospital
    • 2)Refrains from discussing confidential information with co-workers, friends, and family members.
    • 3)Restricts the patient from reading their chart unless in the presence of a medical professional.
    • 4)Checks for LET (Limited Emergency Treatment) restrictions.
  • Secondary Activities
    • 1)Assist in training as requested.
    • 2)Complete equipment moves as assigned.
    • 3)Completes other duties as assigned.


Education/Experience Required:
  • High School education or equivalent experience. This position will need to recognize needs and behaviors of a variety of age groups of patients treated, i.e. understand child growth and development, normal patterns of adolescent behavior and look for signs of normal aging; prior experience with various age groups is preferred


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • Good communication skills. Ability to anticipate patient, employee, and unit need and refer for appropriate action. Customer Service Skills. Must be able to read, write and speak English. Basic math skills. Flexible, versitility, reliablility and a team player. Utilize good judgement.
  • CPR certification required-is included in new hire orientation if needed.


Physicial Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Ability to work weekends, and work different shifts to accommodate staffing needs. Ability to perform lifting/transfer activities related to patients. Safe body mechanics. Ability to perform very heavy lifting (up to 100 pounds occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds frequently and/or in excess of 20 pounds constantly). Ability to maneuver and operate equipment used by the department. Routinely works with potentially infectious specimens and patients. Ability to assist in evacuation of patients in the event of a fire or other disaster. Work environment includes probability of exposure to adverse, hazardous or unpleasant conditions while caring for the sick. continuous walking throughout shift. Pushing, pulling, stooping, bending, twisting.
  • If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
