Director, Learning Assistants Program

Job Summary

The Director of the Learning Assistants Program is responsible for the comprehensive leadership and management of the program, including strategic planning, academic oversight, personnel management, and fiscal administration. The Director will champion the program's mission by communicating the vision and goals of the unit to community and professional constituencies to identify opportunities for innovation, collaboration, and interdisciplinary work that benefit faculty and students and raise the visibility of the institution and its disciplines. The Director will ensure the program's overall academic quality and align it with university goals, policies, strategic plans, and relevant regulations.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Oversees strategic planning and hiring based on student and stakeholder needs.
  • Enhances student success, timely graduation, and the development of transferable skills of students in the Learning Assistants Program.
  • Advocates for the Learning Assistants Program's major priorities with external audiences and works to obtain external funding for program needs and growth.
  • Promotes quality and excellence in teaching and fosters an environment of openness and civility.
  • Monitors the hiring of faculty who will teach classes using active pedagogy and Learning Assistants to help ensure students' academic success and high-quality teaching.
  • Actively engages in university leadership tasks and collaborates with colleagues across campus to achieve university goals.
  • Manages the program's budget effectively and manages funds to ensure that resources are allocated effectively to meet strategic objectives and program goals.
  • Represents the program in university-wide and interdivisional leadership committees and meetings as appropriate and collaborates across committees and academic units to support students' academic success.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization.
  • Appropriate educational credentials as required by faculty rank for the position: Instructor III, Associate Professor, Full Professor.
  • Significant record of progressive administrative responsibility.
  • Experience teaching and/or working with student classroom teaching assistants.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in a discipline offered within the University.
  • Experience supervising Learning Assistants and Learning Assistants Program.
  • Experience teaching a pedagogy course in active learning and techniques used by Learning Assistants to enhance students' academic success.
  • Involvement with International Learning Assistant Conference (ILAC).
  • Experience with or ability to learn Learning Assistants Campus software.
  • Experience liaising with university learnership and faculty across campus to advocate and promote academic services such as the Learning Assistant Program.
  • Experience with obtaining external funding to support innovative teaching and learning.
  • Record of scholarly productivity, including professional conference presentations, funded external grants, and refereed scholarly works/publications.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of higher education processes and resultant information needs, including risk and regulatory factors relating to information flows.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, and coordination of people and resources in a complex organization.
  • Knowledge of and ability to teach using active learning pedagogy.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work across functions at a senior level to influence and effect change to achieve common goals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to deliver presentations to individuals and groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare high-level analysis of data and communicate complicated matters in a meaningful and structured way to a variety of audiences, including senior leadership, the community, and government leaders.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively, have a high standard of integrity, and be motivated to incorporate best practices into the organizational structure.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of independent judgment in the establishment, interpretation, application, and enforcement of all rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Ability to advocate for resources and funding for the Learning Assistant Program, within the university and externally with donors and community partners.
  • Ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of staff, faculty, students, and the community in a service-oriented environment.
  • Ability to effectively manage the work of others by providing guidance and motivation while establishing goals and expectations of accountability.
  • Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes an equitable environment.

Special Instructions to Applicants:

Appointment will be made at an out-of-unit faculty rank commensurate with the candidate's experience on a 12-month out-of-unit multi-year appointment basis beginning as early as in August 2025.
