The Position

The Port of Portland is hiring for an
Baggage Handling System Mechanic

Your role: To provide the skilled labor to maintain and repair mechanical systems at PDX including the automated baggage handling and sorting system, automated exit lanes, grease waste system and other tasks as assigned by management. To participate in training as identified by PDX management required in support of maintenance activities at Port Aviation Facilities

Essential Job Duties

  • Perform repairs, calibrations, maintenance and parts replacement to mechanical components of PDX systems and/or equipment. Including but not limited to:
    • Perform preventative maintenance
    • Calibrate equipment
    • Monitor system performance
    • Trouble shoot problems
    • Replace worn parts
    • Evaluate system condition and make reports
    • Perform emergency repair
    • Track and replace conveyor belts
    • Support operational contingency plans as required
    • Maintain, test, & repair revolving, sliding and overhead doors
    • Maintain a clean working environment
    • Maintain tools and instruments
  • Work in a safe manner following all safety protocols and requirements.
  • Maintain the BHS to 99% availability with a 3 minute response time.
  • Maintain security and limited access to BHS and screening equipment.
  • Work cooperatively with internal and external customers including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Airport Operations Supervisors (AOS), Portland Airline Consortium (PAC), airport tenants, airline personnel, general public, and other crafts

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience working with automated baggage handling or materials handling systems preferred; experience working in aviation or industrial setting is desirable; or the equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience.
  • Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the job duties.
  • Ability to pass and maintain a Criminal History Records check and Security Threat Assessment required for a PDX Security Badge required
  • Maintain a valid state drivers' license required
Demonstrated knowledge:
  • Strong trouble-shooting skills
  • Shows the utmost respect for others and is a proven team player.
Ability to:
  • Work in tight spaces and at heights
  • Work in noisy, heated environment in and around fast moving equipment
  • lift and move up to 100 pounds
  • follow instructions and meet deadlines in a fast paced working environment
  • interpret technical instruction books and manuals
  • work independently, with little or no supervision
  • exercise good judgment in the absence of specific direction
  • communicate effectively both verbally and in writing


Supplemental and Selection Information

SELECTION PROCESS (tentative schedule):

  1. A minimum qualification evaluation of education, training, and experience of submitted application packets will take place by Human Resources the week of November 18, 2024.

  2. A Subject Matter Expert (SME) Panel will perform an evaluation of experience and training taken from your employment application materials including any responses to the supplemental questionnaire.

  3. Our goal is to schedule oral panel interviews with candidates that successfully passed the SME evaluation step approximately the week of December 16, 2024
