The TSGI (Technology Strategy and Global Infrastructure) team is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Mainframe Performance and Capacity Planning Specialist to join our IT team. In this role, you will be responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and optimizing the performance and capacity of our mainframe systems. Your expertise will ensure the reliability, efficiency, and scalability of our mainframe infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of our business. Key responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring mainframe performance using specialized tools and software. Analyzing performance metrics to identify bottlenecks and areas for improvement.

  • Developing and maintaining capacity planning models to forecast future resource requirements. Ensuring that system capacity meets current and anticipated business needs.

  • Implementing and managing performance-tuning strategies to enhance system efficiency. Recommending and applying adjustments to optimize resource utilization.

  • Diagnosing and resolving performance-related issues. Collaborating with other IT teams to address and resolve complex problems affecting system performance.

  • Generating regular performance and capacity reports. Providing insights and recommendations based on data analysis to senior management and other stakeholders.

  • Overseeing configuration changes and updates to ensure they do not adversely affect system performance. Maintaining documentation related to system configurations and changes.

  • Analyzing historical performance data to identify trends and making proactive recommendations for improvements or upgrades.

  • Working closely with application developers, system administrators, and other IT professionals to understand application demands and impact on mainframe performance.

  • Assisting in the development and testing of disaster recovery plans related to mainframe systems to ensure business continuity.

  • Ensuring all activities comply with organizational policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.

You'll need to have:
  • Bachelor's degree or four or more years of work experience

  • Six or more years of relevant experience required, demonstrated through one or a combination of work and/or military experience, or specialized training.

  • Experience in mainframe performance and capacity planning in large z/OS environments or related experience in Client-server, Mid-range, and Cloud environments.

  • Mainframe security experience: RACF, Security Compliance/Privacy Management concepts, Regulatory Standards/Policies (NIST/PCI/HIPAA/GDPR).

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex performance data.

  • Expert in capacity planning and performance tuning of mainframe systems.

  • Deep understanding of z/OS, SYSPLEX, CICS, MQ, DBMSs, and Networking.

  • Vulnerability scanning, Penetration testing, Certificate management and management of communication protocols like SSL/AT-TLS.

Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. Relevant certifications (e.g., IBM Certified Specialist) are a plus.

  • Knowledge of z16 architecture including zIIP and Coupling Facilities, and I/O subsystems and access methods.

  • Expertise in z/OS Sysplex management, WLM, RMF, MXG, and EXCEL.

  • Insight into SCRT reporting and IBM and other mainframe vendor software pricing structures.

  • Experience in using analytics and observability tools such as Grafana, Dynatrace, Kibana, NewRelic, Splunk, Prometheus, etc

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.

  • Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple priorities.

  • Proven ability to work with application teams to ensure efficient system use and optimal configuration planning.

  • Ability to stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies.

  • Able to explain complex technical requirements and considerations across varied technical and managerial levels.
