The City of Champaign is looking for people with knowledge about and experience with sanitary and storm sewer maintenance to join their team as a Sewer Maintenance Worker II in the Sewer section of the Public Works Department. This is a great opportunity to expand your skills and provide a valuable service to the residents of our community.

Responsibilities of Position

The Sewer Maintenance Worker II is part of a skilled team that perform a variety of routine and preventive maintenance and repairs of the City's storm and sanitary sewers. They clean and inspect sewers using televising cameras and other specialized equipment, prepare curbs and pavements for repairs, troubleshoot backups, and replace sewers and manhole covers. They operate a variety of heavy and small equipment, participate in the City's snow and ice removal efforts and respond to other emergencies and call-outs that may require working up to 16-hour shifts at all hours with little or no advance notice, assist with the yard waste collection program, and provide excellent customer service to residents.

The base salary range is $29.75 - $36.24 per hour.  Applications must be submitted online no later than Sunday, November 17, 2024.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Work experience in the maintenance and repair of sanitary and storm sewers.
  • Or an equivalent combination of work experience and vocational training that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.  
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Physical condition necessary to perform the duties of the job as noted in the job description, with or without accommodation.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • A State of Illinois Class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement and without air brake restriction is required within an approved timeframe.
  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a two-year vocational or training program in a related area or qualifying co-op or apprenticeship.
  • Ability to operate sewer-related equipment, such as combination sewer trucks, jet rodders, backhoes, front-end loaders, and the televising van.
  • Snow and ice removal experience.
  • Experience leading a work crew. 

Drug screening and criminal history background check will be required.
