Essential Job Duties |
NC State University invites applications for a dynamic faculty position in Soil Science. The selected candidate will lead a comprehensive research, teaching, and extension program, integrating pedologic and hydropedologic principles with modern methodologies to address contemporary issues in soil science and land use. The program will examine interactions among water, soil properties, and human activities across various spatial and temporal scales, contributing to the future of soil science and inspiring the next generation of soil scientists.
Key Responsibilities:
Research: Develop and lead a research program focused on soil science, with emphasis areas tailored to the candidate's expertise. Potential topics may include:
- Assessing soil properties using geospatial techniques at field, landscape, or regional scales
- Using pedologic and/or hydrologic models to predict climate change impacts on soils
- Studying wetland soil function at landscape scale
- Improving waste disposal system effectiveness in challenging soils
The successful candidate will seek external funding, present research findings at state, regional, and national symposia and publish research studies in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals.
Teaching: Teach an upper-level undergraduate or graduate course in soil science, tailored to expertise, with potential topics such as hydropedology, wetland soils, or GIS applications. Training on soil-landscape relationships and soil interpretations for land use decisions is desirable. Online instruction can be used to fulfill part of the teaching requirements. Extension/Outreach: Activities should also support soil interpretations for land use. Opportunities include developing materials to support various stakeholder groups making decisions about rural and urban land use in a changing climate and participating in the on-site waste training program. Outreach opportunities also include participation in youth training activities such as FFA land judging and Envirothon.
