Job Description
Job Summary Perform metal work including, but not limited to the design, layout form into fabrication, installation and repair of metal items, structures or devices as well as inspect, maintain, repair and install all types of roofing systems. Take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participate in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment. Essential Functions
Must be able to design, layout and select types of materials required for projects. Design, assemble, install and repair metal, including but not limited to gutters, drainpipes and other metalwork as assigned. Perform surface preparation finishing or prime coating as required. Must prepare and maintain electronic records to include, but not limited to preventive maintenance (PM) schedule through work order system and other related documents as required. Responsible for storage, cleaning, maintenance and care of all related equipment. Must be able to undertake work assignments received in the form of oral or written instruction, as well as sketches or blueprints. Must be able to work with outside vendors, including project management and vendor quotes as needed. Work in support of other trades as needed, including coordination of sequencing. Must maintain in-house stock and inventory of equipment, materials and supplies. Must maintain and modify roofing specs and standards. Must be familiar with and able to operate within various building codes, safety regulations, environmental regulations, etc. Must maintain a clean, organized and safe work area. Observe OSHA safety regulations and practices at all times and participate in required safety programs. Read and comply with all department notices and attend meetings as required. Complete assigned project work. Must report all necessary maintenance and repair items via the work order system. Responsible for nuisance wildlife management including trapping, extrication from buildings and removal. Drive college vehicles as assigned. Responsible for cleaning vehicles, inspecting for damage and performing visual check prior to using. Reporting any issues discovered to the supervisor immediately. Ability to work hours which may include nights and weekends as needed to satisfy the needs of the position. Remove ice and snow and perform sanding as assigned. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Other Functions All employees are expected to participate in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment. Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)
High school/vocational diploma, GED equivalent or combination of education and experience. A minimum of 7 years sheet metal/roofing experience. Additional formal training/certification in roofing repair/installation and metal work desirable. Must have a valid driver's license. Must complete and comply with all college driving credentialing requirements. Upon award of this position, a Division of Motor Vehicles background check will be completed. Must provide own transportation to carry out college work, which is reimbursable according to union contract agreement. Must be able to safely lift and carry up to fifty pounds regularly and ninety pounds occasionally. Must be able to bend, walk, stand, climb stairs and ladders and safely operate loaded hand trucks and dollies. Must possess Hoisting Engineer (HE) 1C Telescoping Boom license (without cable) or ability to obtain said license within 6 months of hire. Must possess a Problem Animal Control Agent license (PAC) or have ability to obtain within 6 months of hire. Must demonstrate proficiency in accessing the internet, using the Smith College email, finance, payroll and calendar systems, trade related database systems as well as the work order system. Must be able to pass a background check Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Skills
Must be proficient and fluent in all types of welding and cutting of metals MIG, TIG, brazing, plasma cutting and oxygen/acetylene cutting. Must have knowledge and ability to cut, punch, shear, press and form material from various types of metals using tin snips, hammer, hand or power operated shearers, rollers, benders, breakers, drills, forming machines, and welding equipment. Strong knowledge of all characteristics and working properties of various roofing and metal materials, procedures and systems. Must possess ability to use good judgment to take appropriate, independent action to carry out the primary functions of the job. Must have excellent customer service skills and have noted ability to work well with staff, students and all members of the college community. Must demonstrate strong communication skills, including oral, written and electronic. Must have commitment to maintain high standards of maintenance Must be able to work independently and in a team environment. Must possess knowledge of all safety regulations applicable to work performed. Must have knowledge of OSHA regulations for the safety of the college employees, its users and property. Must demonstrate ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS). Must possess ability to interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches and other specifications as well as plan work procedures. Must possess sufficient strength and dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this job including, but not limited to heavy lifting, climbing ladders and working at heights. Also, must be proficient in working with lift systems, ladders, scaffolding and the use of safety harnesses and accessories. Must possess knowledge of Massachusetts Wildlife Laws and Regulations and have ability to carry out processes in regard to trapping and removal of nuisance pests. Must be familiar with design inspection, maintenance, repair and installation of shingle style roofing systems (wood, asphalt, slate, etc.), built up roofing systems, single ply roofing systems, metal roofing systems and other roofing systems installed on the campus. Must be able to operate and maintain all the tools and equipment required in the roofing process. Must have a clear understanding of the union contract and all college policies.
