Job Summary

This position description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification. It is not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, responsibilities and qualifications which may be required of the employee assigned to the position.

The employee in this role performs Supervisory Level functions/duties including performs lead/advanced operational duties, train subordinates in work techniques, participate in employee performance appraisals and corrective discipline, set priorities and coordinate work of the unit, assist in establishing new work methods and procedures, and participates in recruitment efforts. This position is responsible for developing and providing educational support, training, and staff development of new and current Anesthesia Technicians. The employee in this role will identify the learning needs Anesthesia Technicians and provides ongoing and continuous unit education, reviews Anesthesia Technicians' competencies at regular intervals and maintain competency documentation of the Anesthesia Technician Staff.

This position is directly responsible in providing supervisorial and technical support for pre-, intra-, and post-procedure to anesthesia providers in all service areas including, but not limited to: Pavilion Operating Room, Same Day Surgery Center, Children's Surgery Center, University Tower Surgery Suite, Labor and Delivery, interventional Radiology, Cancer Center, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, Cardiac Cath Lab, EP lab, G. I. Lab, IPOR, Neonatal ICU, CT Suites, SICU and MRI.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • 3+ years of work experience as an Anesthesia Technician in a similar setting Operating Room/Hospital
  • SKILLS Demonstrated analytical skills to evaluate problems, streamline processes, review policies, procedures, and processes to make decisions, provide recommendations, and develop justifications to resolve issues to lead to a demonstrated conclusion Strong problem-solving skills to independently define a problem identify the resources available to help solve the problem, create viable solutions and take the action necessary to implement them, and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties. Decision making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to take action and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached Excellent organizational skills to determine workload priorities to enable timely completion of tasks. Ability to work effectively and independently under pressure with a minimum of direction. Skills to set priorities and carry out plans for completion of projects efficiently and timely manner. Develop Investigative skills with degree of accuracy and attention to detail. Excellent interpersonal skills and abilities to work effectively with a wide variety of people including medical students, school of medicine personnel, faculty, and community physicians, to promote successful relations employing tact and diplomacy. Ability to manage conflict in a constructive manner to achieve win/win solutions. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to express ideas assertively, clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing. Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with others to secure necessary information and cooperation from a variety of people. Demonstrated leadership skills sufficient to participate in the recruitment, selection, training, evaluation, motivating, and making appropriate recommendation on corrective action related to anesthesia staff. Demonstrated supervisory skills to effectively lead and delegate tasks, set performance standards, direct staff and evaluate performance Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language. Ability to utilize medical terminology appropriately Knowledge of current trends in nursing. Commitment to excellence in patient care. Effective interpersonal skills. Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care, taking into consideration protective interventions, development (behavioral and physical) and physiological characteristics specific to the patients. KNOWLEDGE Knowledge of and the ability to interpret all state and federal regulations (i.e., Cal-OSHA, Title XXII, Occupational Health &Safety, Infection Control, TJC, and State Fire Codes regarding medical supplies and equipment, construction projects, etc.) Knowledge of ASATT guidelines (Certified Anesthesia TechnologisU Technician) Must have a strong background in life sciences and medicine. Must have had some form of laboratory experience or relevant education. Knowledge of medical, anesthesia, and surgical terminology. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and CPR. Knowledge of anesthesia machines, supplies, and drugs. Have a thorough understanding of anesthesia procedures, in addition to knowledge of emergent and routinely used equipment. Knowledge of medications, Indications, dosage ranges, side effects, and potential toxicity dispensed from Pyxis. Knowledge of principles and practices of asepsis/sterile techniques

Preferred Qualifications

  • Cer.A.T. certification from the AmericanSociety of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT)preferred
  • 1+ years of Supervisor work experience in a healthcare setting
  • * Skill in managing daily operations of the Anesthesia Technicians, coordinating, and providing technical support to Anesthesia Providers * Ability to prepare anesthetizing locations for indicated procedures to include setting up and calibrating monitoring devices and troubleshoot anesthesia equipment malfunctions. * Skill to provided clinical instruction pertaining to anesthesia protocols and technical procedures

Department Overview

Anesthesia Technicians are responsible for maintaining all anesthesia service areas in readiness for use by Anesthesiologist and Anesthetists. Incumbents are responsible for anesthesia equipment and supplies; work independently and be able to make decisions and set priorities with some guidance; responsible for knowledge of and compliance with all applicable infection control, health and safety policies and procedures as implemented by the institution; may assist Anesthesiologists with patient positioning, preparation of sterile fields, placement of invasive monitoring lines, application of regional, epidural and spinal anesthesia techniques, invasive and noninvasive procedure setups, or perform and/or record cardiac output determinations.
