Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Paralegal for the Office of the Senior Vice President and General Counsel.
Provides a wide variety of confidential paralegal support to the Office of the Senior Vice President and General Counsel. Handles attorney-client privileged and confidential attorney work-product documents, information, and communications.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
- Act as intake for email inquiries through the OGC general email address and other requests for advice or assistance; review and redirect such inquiries as appropriate, under the guidance of a Senior Paralegal or OGC Attorney;
- Assist attorneys and outside counsel in responding to discovery requests and information and document requests in litigations, arbitrations, and administrative proceedings; coordinate the gathering of responsive documents, electronic information, and other relevant materials and information; inquire of clients for relevant materials and information; liaise as necessary with appropriate IT personnel; identify and coordinate interaction with key players (i.e. witnesses, document custodians, consultants and experts);
- Receive, review, and respond to subpoenas and other third-party information requests; ensure proper service; work with the entity/law firm that issued the subpoena, under the guidance of a Senior Paralegal or OGC attorney; prepare documentary responses and coordinate with the unit/person served; assure compliance with state and federal laws such as FERPA and HIPAA.
- Contact appropriate university personnel to obtain information necessary for attorneys to provide advice and consultation on, among other things, student affairs, labor, employment, academic, health care, real estate and transactional matters;
- Perform tasks as assigned with respect to the e-billing and matter management systems, including but not limited to charting the office's caseload and other relevant metrics.
- Assist attorneys in legal research projects and perform basic legal research as directed by an attorney; proofread briefs, check legal citations, review case cites;
- Report claims and lawsuits to Risk Management; coordinate with Risk Management and respond to that office's requests for information and documentation; assist the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsels in preparing reports, charts, presentations and other materials for departmental and university matters.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- A bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- A minimum of two (2) years of recent full-time experience working as a paralegal.

Certifications/Licenses |
- A Paralegal Certification.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
- Excellent writing, verbal and interpersonal communications skills.
- A high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- The ability to understand and adhere to priorities and to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Must be detail oriented and analytical, with strong organizational skills and be able to carry out the principal duties with limited supervision.
- Must maintain a high degree of confidentiality and be able to communicate effectively with clients, attorneys and other professionals using discretion, good judgment and having a professional demeanor.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook and Excel).

Preferred Qualifications |
- A minimum of three (3) years of recent full-time experience working as a paralegal.
- Experience with employment litigation, including responses to EEOC charges and the mediation. process is preferred.
- Experience with e-discovery is preferred.
- Experience with e-billing and matter management systems is preferred, but not required.
