Position Purpose |
The Director of Program Safety (
DPS) has primary responsibility for evaluating and monitoring program risk, safety and security concerning Guarini Institute programs and operations. Under the guidance of the Guarini Institute Executive Director, and working closely with all Guarini Institute staff, program partners domestically and abroad, campus risk managers and other campus units, the
DPS will lead the ongoing development and review of policies and protocols designed to enhance the safety of undergraduate study away programs and participants. The
DPS will be responsible for communicating with a variety of constituents about off-campus and overseas health, safety, security, and compliance matters, and for developing and managing resources related to these issues. |

Skills & Knowledge
- Experience with study abroad policy development and knowledge of best practices within the field regarding health, safety and security strongly preferred
- Research and analytical skills as demonstrated by the ability to elicit pertinent quantitative and qualitative data from various sources; identify key factors, trends, and issues; analyze and summarize possible implications, and make recommendations for action.
- Proficiency with various information technologies including database management systems, collaboration tools, web content management, online survey tools, social media, and video technology.
- Ability to make effective oral and written presentations to further health, safety and security goals and to communicate policies and procedures
- Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team approach, taking initiative to advance projects to completion
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive personal and financial information
- Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse community
Experience
- 6-10 years working within a university/academic or international education or program environment
- Experience in a study abroad office
- Experience living, working or studying abroad

Key Accountabilities
Description |
Health, Safety and Security Policy, Resource, and Procedure Development and Implementation
- The DPS will monitor world events and issues affecting the health, safety and security of those participating on Guarini Institute programs and disseminate alerts, announcements and make recommendations for further action.
- The DPS is responsible for leading the development, review, dissemination, and implementation of policies and resources related to health, safety and security of participants on Guarini Institute sponsored study away programs.
- In collaboration with Guarini Institute and other College staff, the DPS will develop, plan and implement safety and security training materials for use in education abroad orientations and online learning modules for students, faculty and directors' assistants.
- In collaboration with the Office of Risk and Internal Control Services (RICS) and other campus partners, the DPS will assist with administration of the College's Travel Registry and Travel Waiver Review processes, including continuously evaluating opportunities for procedural and system enhancements.
- The DPS serves as the primary contact at the Guarini Institute for students, faculty directors, and parents regarding travel medical and security assistance coverage and travel abroad health insurance processes and policies. This position will communicate with the Risk and Internal Control Services and the Dartmouth Student Group Health Plan office (DSGHP) to ensure that policies meet the needs of the Guarini Institute's programs and services.
- The DPS will maintain the Guarini Institute incident reporting database by collecting information required for internal risk management purposes. The DPS will also collect all information needed to meet Guarini Institute Clery Act reporting requirements.
- The DPS serves as the primary contact at the Guarini Institute for questions about visas for travel outside of the United States.
- The DPS monitors the legal and regulatory environment for recent developments of interest to Institute managed operations, recommending further review or action where appropriate.
- The DPS will lead the development, refinement and implementation of information security policies, procedures and standards for the Guarini Institute and its study away programs.
- The DPS will maintain key relationships with national and international education professional organizations to stay abreast of global health and safety trends, technologies and best practices.
- The DPS will work with onsite partners, including program partners, to gather data about program operations in order to assess risk and evaluate site appropriate measures to ensure guidelines for health and safety are being met for the purposes of Dartmouth and the local context.
- Participates in periodic program site visits in support of the Institute's efforts to ensure the safe and efficient operation of programs.

Description |
Emergency Preparedness Coordination and Response Support
- The DPS supports the Executive Director in the development, coordination and execution of emergency management and response protocols and policies.
- The DPS updates and maintains emergency preparedness and response plans managed by the Guarini Institute. In the event of an emergency, the DPS convenes the emergency response team, documents the steps taken, and manage communications with the appropriate units on campus.
- Participates in the on-call rotation for education abroad emergencies (evenings and weekends).
