Research Program Assistant/Phlebotomist

TheDepartment of Epidemiology is seeking a Research Program Assistant/Phlebotomist, to be responsible for administering questionnaires, blood draws, and HIV Rapid testing within the research clinic for the ALIVE Study, a longitudinal study of HIV infection among people who inject drugs (PWID) and substudies. This position reports to the Clinic Director.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Implement and adhere to study protocols.
  • Obtain informed consent from research participants.
  • Administer questionnaires and functional assessments/vital signs to participants in the ALIVE study and sub-studies.
  • Enter participant data and maintain clinical database.
  • Monitor data quality and accuracy as required by research protocols.
  • Cross trained to cover for the receptionist, support substudies within ALIVE and administer HIV Rapid testing.
  • Adhere to the highest clinical and research standards which include HIPPA rules to protect the confidentiality of health-related information.
  • Clerical duties as assigned.
  • Complete lab requisitions and transmittals.
  • Perform blood and urine collection procedures for the ALIVE study and substudies.
  • Process and package specimens.
  • Transport specimens to lab.
  • Coordinate and respond to lab inquiries.
  • Maintain and track lab supply needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Phlebotomy skills required.
  • Knowledge of HIV infection & AIDS, Hepatitis C and drug using & medical terminology associated with HIV disease.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Experience in human subjects' research and survey administration strongly preferred.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent, with some college courses preferred.
  • Some related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
