Position: Student Tech - DI

Position Summary: The Student Technologist utilizes knowledge in patient, equipment, and exam room preparation. He /she is responsible for quality patient positioning, image quality identification and completion of the exam process to include post processing, PACS, Cerner and transport of the patient post completion of the exam. The Student Technologist is NOT allowed to make exposures on ionizing radiation producing equipment, per licensure specifications from the Bureau of Radiation Control through the DSHS. The Student Technologist ensures equipment is in proper working order and that the equipment and work area are clean. This position will assist the physicians, RPA's and Nursing staff to ensure the correct exam is performed in a safe environment. The Student Technologist utilizes the Principles of Continuous Quality Improvement and Radiation Safety Principles. The Student Technologist has the knowledge to work with all age groups (pediatric, geriatric, trauma, surgical). The Student Technologist must be currently registered in the Radiology program at an accredited teaching facility and eligible to take the registry at the conclusion of his/her coursework and program.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of technical procedures without producing the actual radiation exposure.
  • Assist Radiologist, RPA's and staff physicians as needed.
  • Shows appropriate radiographic skills and demonstrates good patient care.
  • Uses immobilization devices according to policy and follows all hospital and UHS policies and procedures to include contrast injections.
  • Maintains all HIPPA regulations and good communications skills.
  • Has good problem resolution and acts in a professional and customer services oriented manner.
  • Provides an environment conducive to safety for patients, visitors and employees.
  • The Student Technologist assesses risks to patient safety and implements the appropriate precaution.
  • The Student Technologist complies with appropriate and approved standards to include: Radiation Safety (ALARA), patient related safety, and infection control.

Qualifications

Education, Training, Experience and Licenses/Registrations Required:

Eligible to graduate an Accredited Radiography Program, set for ARRT, and apply for Texas License within a year.
Must have current CPR certification

Physical and Sensory Requirements:

1. Ability to read and write in English
2. Ability to speak and hear, to allow discussions with employees and peers.
3. Ability to cope with and remain calm under stress.
4. Dosimetry badge must be worn appropriately at all times.
5. Ability to evaluate and interpret information and make independent decisions
6. Bending and lifting (50-75 lbs), grasping, fine hand coordination, pushing and pulling.
7. Electrical and radiant energy hazards are present.
8. Ability to respond to pages and calls.
9. Near visual acuity and depth perception to examine images for pertinent detail.
10. Appropriate use of protective lead shielding.
