Basic Function

Responsible for the general maintenance and rebuilding of pumps, gearboxes, fans, blowers, and other process equipment. Inspects, diagnoses, and does minor and major repair work on pumps. Performs mechanical work on hydraulic equipment, valves, gearboxes, compressors, motors, controls, and associated equipment. The mechanics repair lift stations, transfer pumps, and drain stations. They examine the pumps for possible malfunctions and find the wear or damage, such as blown out packing and seal damage. Among the tools they use during their mechanical tasks are high torque drills, basic hand tools, sandblasters, torches, and precision measurement tools. Additional responsibilities include general pipefitting repairs and installations, fabrication of guards, parts, and other materials required by production.

Job Duties

  • Readtechnical manuals to understand equipment and controls.
  • Disassemble machinery and rotating equipment when there is a problem.
  • Install, troubleshoot, repair, and replace broken or malfunctioning components on machinery or rotating equipment.
  • Adjust and align machine parts, calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers, vernier calipers, and dial indicators.
  • Align equipment to industry standards using dial indicators or laser alignment equipment.
  • Machine parts to specifications, using machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, drill press, or grinders.
  • Repair, adjust or replace various types of mechanical seals and packing.
  • Operate motorized, pneumatic, hydraulic, and manual equipment.
  • Operate equipment including forklift and man-lift.
  • Read and interpret vendor equipment information.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment to minimize down time.
  • Perform general maintenance including connecting and disconnecting piping, tubing, and blinding.
  • Enter and retrieve computer data (MS Office, SAP, and others).
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repairs.
  • Work at heights, within hazardous classified locations, and under supplied air in toxic atmospheres as required.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Create and maintain a neat, clean, and well-organized work area.
  • Available to work overtime and callouts as required.
  • Follow through on commitments made to others.
  • Be available for on-call and after hours work as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.



Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from timeto time in their sole and complete discretion.

Experience

A minimum of five (5) years relevant work experience that includes at least two (2) years of experience as a pump mechanic, machinist, or compressor mechanic, or two (2) years of military experience working with pumps, compressors, or an Associates Degree in Industrial Machinery Maintenance is required.

Education Level

High school diploma or general education development certificate (GED).

Required Skills

Proficient in computer usage including Microsoft Office Suite and computer maintenance management software (i.e. SAP) or similar maintenance management software.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility

May lead the work of contractors.

Work Conditions

Office and field based, with up to 5% travel by land and air required. Petroleum refinery, warehouse/plant environment, out-of-doors environment, driver based environment including but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, rotating equipment, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, and working in confined spaces. Subject to all temperatures, weather, and road conditions.

Physical Requirements

Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, reaching or grasping, lifting and/or carrying, pushing and/or pulling, climbing up to 180ft, perceiving color difference, ability to wear personal protective equipment (beards not permitted), and strenuous physical activity.
