Job Summary

The School Kitchen Manager oversees the successful foodservice operation in an assigned school by encouraging maximum student participation and adhering to the regulations of the Child Nutrition Program. (Position requires no nights, weekends or holidays)

Salary Range: $19.07 - 25.36 per hour

Conditions of Employment

ServSafe Certification preferred (must become certified within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter)

Excellent knowledge of the food purchasing process and the ability to work within a budget

Physical Demands:

Majority of the work is performed by standing or walking. The work requires using hands for simple grasping, pushing and pulling. The work at times requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching with the ability to lift, carry, push or pull heavy weighted items. Must be able to lift a minimum of 35 pounds. The work requires activities involving exposure to changes in temperature and humidity.
Other Information

THE SELECTION PROCESS: will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral or performance tests; or other assessment methods. The Office of Human Resources reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job. Applicants will be notified by email the date, time and place of the examination.

Qualifications

Education Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Associates degree in dietetics, food service, hospitality services preferred

Experience Requirements:

  • Two years of recent full-time experience as a professional cook in a kitchen preparing at least 100 meals per sitting and producing a wide variety of food items in an institutional setting or a full-service restaurant (An associates degree in culinary arts may be substituted for the full-time experience)
  • Must have successfully completed Milwaukee Public Schools Nutrition Service Management Training Program OR have a minimum of one-year management experience working as a food service manager

Education and experience may be considered in lieu of degree

Responsibilities

  • Actively engage and supervise the daily food preparation and service of high quality, nutritious meals to students and adults
  • Ensures adherence to established local, state and federal guidelines and regulations for preparing, serving, counting and claiming meals
  • Ensures compliance with food safety and sanitation standards in accordance with the local governing agency and MPS HACCP policy and safety procedures
  • Supervises and trains food service assistants in their work by instructing them on daily tasks and preparing work schedules
  • Supervises and trains food service manager trainees on the specifics of the position as needed
  • Supervise staff to ensure consistent, prompt service and efficient use of time
  • Supervises and assists in cleaning kitchens, storerooms, refrigerators and other kitchen equipment
  • Monitors employee performance daily, documents improvements as needed, provides suggestions for improvement, recognizes outstanding work and completes evaluations
  • Inspects food quality and quantity, recipe compliance, cafeteria cleanliness and service on a continual basis
  • Responsible for kitchen bookkeeping activities, that include but not limited to, daily reports, production reports and deposits
  • Processes all on-line food and stock requisitions
  • Checks in all deliveries and maintains back of house inventory
  • Practices exceptional customer service skills
  • Attends required meetings and in-service trainings
  • Actively supports the MPS Strategic Plan
  • Performs other duties as assigned
