Environmental Health Trainer

The Town of Needham's Public Health Division seeks engaged individuals for the grant-funded position of Environmental Health Trainer, Special Assignment Support. This role will provide training to local public health professionals throughout eastern Massachusetts from the MA/NH border south to Dover/Sherborn, MA, on effectively enforcing State/Federal Environmental and Sanitary Codes, Town by-laws, and Board of Health Regulations. The Environmental Health Trainer will also instruct local public health professionals on how to ensure compliance, and communicate health information to the public, as well as assist with program development. A strong candidate will possess training background and interest in serving a wide variety of environmental health needs for all community members in an inclusive and affirming manner.

This is a grant-funded position with state funding committed through at least 6/30/2027, pending appropriation and programmatic needs.

This program, launched by the State in 2023, aims to ensure all local public health agencies have the tools to understand and implement the same standards to create a 21st century public health system delivering services that meet the needs of all members of the community, regardless of race, income, or zip code, increasing equity of services provided.

• Conduct individual or small group, in-person training in accordance with State curriculum for local public health professionals on topics such as food, housing, summer camp, and Title V, etc.
• Instruct public health professionals on compliance, supporting in implementing policies and procedures within their communities, and communicating health information to the public.
• Collaborate with team to conduct trainings, providing ongoing relevant educational services through website updates, newsletters, and/or social media publications.
• Inform and educate shared services partners and their staff about environmental health training.
• Providing advisory support to local environmental health agents in investigating of local and state regulations relating to environmental health issues or concerns.
• Support shared services partners in achieving and maintaining Performance Standards for local public health as part of the state action for public health excellence program.
• In the event of an emergency, required to serve as part of environmental health response team.

• Duties require extensive knowledge of environmental health and sanitation equivalent to completion of a four-year college degree program/bachelor's degree in public or environmental health, Community Health, Public Administration, or a related field.
• Three (3) to five (5) years of work experience, preferably in public or environmental health, public policy, or a related field. Part-time and volunteer experience will be considered.
• Demonstrated ability to provide structured training and report back on deliverables.
• Demonstrated project and time management skills.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills.
• Possession of a valid state-issued driver's license with the ability to travel independently throughout eastern Massachusetts.

• Code enforcement experience a plus, specifically in conducting food inspections in enforcement of the 2013 Federal Food Code. Experience with online food inspection software systems/use of iPads, etc., for food establishment inspection data logging/reporting.
• A background in policy and/or education attained through either work experience or a graduate degree in public health, education, or a related field is highly desired.
• Certified Food Safety Manager/Food Allergy certified and/or Certified Pool Operator (CPO), preferred at time of application or must be obtained within one year of employment.
• Registered environmental health agent, or academically qualified to take and pass the registered sanitarian examination within two (2) years of hire.
• Septic system inspector's license, lead determination certificate, and passing of soil evaluator's exam within two (2) years of hire.
