Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume): Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Four (4) years directly related full-time experience in academic advising, counseling, or student services at the college or university level. Experience with curricular development and/or teaching. Experience leading student success, retention, and/or graduation initiatives on the college level. Experience conducting presentations and/or training.
Preferred Qualifications: Masters degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Higher Education Administration, Social Work, Counseling or a related field. Program development and/or management experience. Formal assessment experience. Experience working with college or university faculty. Professional staff supervision experience. Experience training and developing professional staff. Experience with University systems (i.e., PeopleSoft, Navigate, DegreeWorks, and SLATE). Demonstrated understanding and commitment to the mission and shared values of opportunity programs.
Brief Description of Duties: The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and Advancement on Individual Merit (AIM) at Stony Brook University is dedicated to supporting underrepresented students, serving as a vital resource for various university departments involved with this student population. As a member of the leadership team, the Associate Director assists in the management and administrative direction of Stony Brook University's Educational Opportunity Program. Reporting to the Director of EOP, the Associate Director helps oversee coordination of advising operations, departmental seminars, annual summer academy operations, and co-curricular programming. The Associate Director leads efforts in initiating, planning, and developing strategies and initiatives which build community and support academic success, retention, and increased graduation rates.
The Associate Director regularly interacts with faculty, staff, students, and other University areas, such as academic advising units, academic departments, student affairs, and enrollment management. To thrive in this position, the Associate Director must demonstrate flexibility, responsiveness, and problem-solving skills. The incumbent must be able to work independently or in a group setting, have strong written and verbal communication skills, and maintain up-to-date knowledge of university policies and best practices.
Duties:
- Program Coordination:
- Provide academic, financial aid, and personal counseling to special student populations, including transfer students and students in care.
- The Associate Director works to ensure that proactive, high-quality academic advising is provided for students and provides managerial leadership for student registration processes, coordination of advising schedules, and tracking advising operations.
- Presents to students, parents, and university constituents about EOP, and participates in EOP efforts at open houses, admitted student days, and other Admissions related events.
- Program coordinator of the EOP Annual Summer Academy.
- Expand initiatives to engage alumni, students, and the community, and establish an alumni leadership council.
- Operations Management:
- Identify, manage, and coordinate professional development opportunities for staff and oversee the training and support of new team members.
- Assists Director with budget preparation and report completion.
- Oversee the compliance and reporting of all students in the NYS Foster Youth College Success Initiative (FYCSI) for EOP and non-EOP.
- Assists Director for ensuring programs compliance with funding source and University's guidelines.
- In the absence of the Director, the Associate Director may represent the Director, on behalf of the department.
- Serve as a liaison for the department with many other units, such as other areas within the Division of Undergraduate Education, academic departments, student affairs and enrollment management.
- Data Management & Analytics:
- Responsible for data analytics and developing data-based initiatives to enhance student retention.
- Develop assessment initiatives for program efficacy.
- Assists Director with development and implantation of EOP goals and initiatives focused on continuous enhancement and effectiveness of the program.
- Other:
- Work closely with director to design training and evaluation processes for program implementation.
- Participate in recruitment and enrollment initiatives to include evenings, late night and weekends.
- Represent the program in the absence of the Director.
- Other duties or projects as assigned and as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes: This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
