The Program Assistant will assist in planning and conducting county 4-H programs related to Urban Extension in partnership with other 4-H programming staff and Extension personnel at the Mecklenburg County Center. Such programming will include, but not be limited to, school enrichment, club programming, camps, special interest programs, and community outreach events. This staff member will also assist in the training and recruitment of community volunteers and program leaders to expand program outreach throughout Mecklenburg County.
This position is a full-time (1.0
FTE), 40-hour per week position. This position is 100% county-funded.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.
Mecklenburg County is a county located in the southwestern region of the state of North Carolina. Its county seat is Charlotte and is the state's largest city. As of the 2020 census, the population of the county was 1,115,482, making it the second-most populous county in North Carolina (after Wake County) and the first county in the Carolinas to surpass one million in population. Duties and Responsibilities:
The Mecklenburg County 4-H Program Assistant is an employee of NC Cooperative Extension, NC State University. Under the supervision of the County Extension Director (
CED), the 4-H Program Assistant will serve as a positive role model for youth and help to expand the 4-H program in Mecklenburg County.
The Program Assistant will assist:
- In the recruitment and enrollment of volunteer adult leaders and/or school-aged youth participants into the 4-H program
- Deliver, train or teach approved 4-H curriculum to adults and/or youth groups related to STEM education, leadership, life skills, and urban agriculture
- Submit required program records and evaluations as requested
- Promote the 4-H program with the general public and targeted audiences
- Collaborate with the N.C. Cooperative Extension staff in Mecklenburg County as well as various local agencies/organizations
- Assist with securing program resources
The 4-H Program Assistant receives programmatic guidance from the 4-H Agent(s) with overall supervision provided by the
CED. The 4-H Program Assistant works with the 4-H Agent(s), and the
CED to meet the needs of the county. Renewal of the position is contingent on the availability of funds.
The 4-H Program Assistant works with participants in group settings and individually (as needed). While performing this role the 4-H Program Assistant will:
- Travel within the county, district, and state using state, county, or often a personal vehicle. A personal vehicle is required. Travel reimbursement is provided according to state guidelines
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of the role of NCCE as an educational agency
- Facilitate the collection of required data (to include program evaluations) and submit reports to the Extension Reporting system (ERS), the Mecklenburg County 4-H Agent and the Mecklenburg County CED
- Help maintain and guide volunteers, families and youth with 4-H Online enrollments.
- Maintain condentiality of program information
- Attend and participate in required 4-H related meetings and training within the county and outside of the county; a few may include overnight travel
- Engage in lifelong learning and professional development by participating in training and other opportunities as designated by the State 4-H office, the County Extension Director, and the District Extension Director
- Enhance program visibility by communicating program impacts to local stakeholders and potential participants
- Promote educational opportunities beyond 4-H within N.C. Cooperative Extension to partnering agencies and program participants
- Assist in the recruitment, training, and utilization of volunteers to assist in program promotion, planning, and delivery
- Other duties as assigned

The minimum requirement for employment with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension (
NCCE) is a high-school diploma or equivalent. Advanced training in related fields is preferred. |
