Job Summary

#CA-FT

This position supports the departmental purpose by providing skilled anatomical laboratory services, including accessioning, grossing, and assisting with intraoperative consultations, within Anatomic Pathology. Ensures timely and accurate specimen receipt, accessioning and grossing analysis and assists with intraoperative consultations. Performs scheduled maintenance, testing and quality control processes on complex automated equipment and instruments, including the preparation of reagents. Performs accurate and efficient grossing procedures for biopsies and minor surgical specimens under the direction of a pathologist. Assists with daily triaging and processing of resection specimens for frozen section, research, routine processing and/or ancillary studies. Maintains and inventories all documents, records and specimens.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Incumbent must possess the minimum level of training/experience for non-Pathologist personnel performing gross examinations as outlined by CLIA and College of American Pathologists (CAP) and provide documentation to demonstrate compliance.
  • An earned bachelor's degree in a chemical or biological science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution
  • Previous experience working in a clinical anatomic laboratory.
  • Must possess working knowledge of medical terminology, basic human anatomy and technical knowledge to complete assigned tasks and knowledge of basic chemistry and biology for understanding methods used in the laboratory.
  • Ability to work with hazardous materials and chemicals.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practice of Universal Precautions.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform a special procedure according to established protocols.
  • Ability to maintain accurate, legible records.
  • Ability to safely lift up to 40 lbs unassisted.Technical and mechanical skills necessary to operate and perform preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment as well as general laboratory maintenance.
  • Ability to work well under pressure while maintaining accuracy and minimizing errors and remain flexible in changing work environment.
  • Ability to recognize processes that could lead to failures.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills to independently manage and prioritize an extensive and varied workload, meet multiple deadlines, and achieve timely progress in specimen processing.
  • Ability to prioritize work based upon departmental turnaround requirements and priority requests.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow established administrative and technical policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain the security of confidential information and exercise judgement, tact, and discretion in handling sensitive or confidential information and situations.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply principles of Customer Service including:Ability to function and work in a diverse work environment.
  • Tact and diplomacy skills to interact with individuals from various backgrounds to meet departmental needs.
  • Ability to establish professional working relationships with all departmental personnel and maintain appropriate interdepartmental communications.
  • Ability to handle telephone and in-person requests with courtesy, accuracy, and respect for patient confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in an Anatomic Pathology Laboratory setting (e.g. Histology, Grossing, Cytology)
  • Previous experience grossing biopsies and minor surgical specimens.
  • Knowledge and experience with cryofreezing and cutting frozen sections using a cryostat.
  • Experience using EPIC.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Laboratory Information System (LIS) system and other basic computer programs (e.g. Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, email, internet, etc.).
  • Knowledge of hospital and laboratory regulations and requirements (e.G. CDPH, CAP, TJC, NAACLS, OSHA).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; documents and reports clearly and concisely; conveys instructions, directions and information appropriately.

Department Overview

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a large, diverse multi-site department whose mission is to create a healthier world through bold innovation in patient care, population health, education, technology and research. This position sets the highest standards for professionalism and competency in providing high quality patient-centered diagnostic and therapeutic care, customer service, and education to patients within UCDHS and its affiliates. Our laboratories are licensed by the State of California, certified by CLIA, accredited by College of American Pathologists (CAP), AABB, and Foundation for Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), and located in three distinct facilities: Surgery and Emergency Services Pavilion (SESP); Pathology Building; and the Specialty Testing Center (STC).The department is one of UCDMC's largest ancillary services departments. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine's mission is to provide high quality patient/physician services, to maintain the excellence of the educational programs, and to perform scholarly research and development. These objectives are to be met within the limits of resources available with emphasis on cost effectiveness and innovation.

Work Environment

Must have the ability to work with potentially biohazardous tissue specimens as well as hazardous chemicals and waste in a congested environment.Must be able to lift and move items weighing up to 40 lbs. Incumbent will also be required to utilize body mechanics (walking, sitting, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, grasping, pushing, pulling, and reaching) when necessary to complete all job duties and functions.Must be able to work variable shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays, and must be able to work occasional overtime as required and respond to "on-call" requirements.
