The Assistant Scientist, under supervision in the laboratory of Dr. Zhang, participates in research projects to study the mechanisms and treatment of mitochondrial dysfunction in heart failure and neurodegenerative diseases. Becomes an expert in one or more specialized techniques to provide data for multiple researchers in the lab; including but not limited to standard molecular biology techniques. Applicants should be able to work with multiple researchers and adapt techniques and experiments to suit specific needs. Willingness to learn new techniques as needed.

Responsibilities include:
Molecular biological techniques, such as the generation of viral vectors, gene cloning, PCR/RT-PCR/qPCR, Western blotting, and protein purification.
Rodent-related studies, including animal handling, surgery, heart disease models (such as ischemia/reperfusion, transverse aortic constriction), neurological animal models (such as brain ischemia/reperfusion model), behavioral tests, tissue dissection, and histology.
Cell biology, including primary cardiomyocyte and neuronal cultures, cell transfection, and imaging collection and analyses.
Research data collection/analysis, figure preparation.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in related field and two years of experience; Master's degree is preferred. Prior experience with handling/experimentation with small rodents. Prior experience in cardiovascular and/or stem cell research. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills & Abilities:
*Demonstrated proficiency in molecular biology techniques.
*Ability to use Microsoft Office programs and applicable computer software.
*Demonstrated ability to complete experiments in a timely manner.
*Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
*Experience operating all standard laboratory equipment.
*Demonstrated ability to work with laboratory animals.
