Introduction

The Loudoun County Circuit Court is seeking a staff attorney interested in combining prior court experience with outstanding analytical skills to give the judges insight into complex issues of law. This is a long-term professional opportunity for an attorney with significant litigation experience looking for a change of pace or with prior experience working in an appellate court.

The staff attorney helps prepare judges presiding over a hearing by providing (in complicated matters) an objective, written summary of the procedural history, issues, relevant facts and exhibits, the legal arguments propounded by the parties, and a recommended ruling. The successful candidate will be capable of conducting complex legal research, drafting legal orders, memoranda, opinions, responding to questions, and providing other legal services as required. This position has no supervisory responsibilities but may perform the responsibilities of the Lead Staff Attorney in their absence.

The successful candidate must attach a five-page (minimum) writing sample to this application.

Hiring salary is commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications

A Juris Doctorate from an accredited Law School (or equivalent as state law provides) is required; three (3) years of prior litigation experience as a licensed practicing attorney; must be a licensed member of the Virginia State Bar (ability to obtain a waiver of admission within a reasonable time is also acceptable, but not to exceed four (4) months).

Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

Successful candidates will undergo background checks as required.

Must be licensed to practice law in Virginia or eligible for licensure. Must be a member in good standing of the Virginia State Bar (or ability to obtain a waiver of admission within a reasonable amount of time, not to exceed four months). Must maintain Virginia Bar license in accordance with Virginia law.
