About This Role
The shelter medicine nurse is responsible for surgical preparation, anesthetic induction/monitoring, intra-operative assistance, and immediate postoperative care for shelter animals on location at regional facilities. This position is also responsible for coordination of activities with regional shelters, medical records, and oversight for stock and cleaning of the mobile surgery unit. As a credentialed veterinary technician working under the supervision of a faculty clinician this individual will have instructional responsibilities and, in this capacity, will independently perform technical procedures, will serve as an instructor for students with judgement made for clinical patients in an anesthetic, surgical and patient care setting. About Us The mobile surgical unit is a program that provides spay/neuter services and basic care for shelter animals maintained at facilities without a veterinarian or surgical facilities. The shelter medicine rotation is an elective course. Approximately 90 senior veterinary students will participate each year and approximately 4500 animals will be surgically altered annually.
