Major Responsibilities:

  • Supports imaging technologists with preparation of patient and examination room prior to, during, and following imaging procedures in accordance with established infection control practices. Organizes and prepares exam rooms and work areas, including cleaning, stocking, and maintaining equipment.
  • Verifies patient identification using two identifiers and communicates with patients to explain procedures, obtain clinical history, confirm acknowledgment of patients' understanding and address any questions about the imaging procedure.
  • Assists patient in preparation for exam and transferring patients to and from exam rooms. Independently transports patients to other areas of the facility as required.
  • Uses the radiology computer systems to generate requisitions, check schedules, and obtain pertinent patient information.
  • Reviews patients medical record to obtain necessary clinical information including patient history, lab results, and physician orders, obtains necessary clinical information from patients, and compares requisitions to physicians' orders to ensure exam accuracy.
  • Positions patients and selects exposure factors for various radiologic examinations following accepted radiation protection and safety practices under the direct supervision of a licensed radiographer. May NOT activate the exposure switch for diagnostic or fluoroscopic procedures.
  • Ensures that images and other patient records are accurately documented, following approved workflows, in SmartChart, RIS and PACS in a timely manner. May NOT independently review and approve images.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providerscertification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA), and
  • Registered Technologist (RT) registration issued by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) needs to be obtained within 120 days of graduation of accredited Radiology Tech program.

Education Required:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved program in Radiologic Technology.
  • IL hires must be students from an accredited radiology program and in 2nd year of clinical training.

Experience Required:

  • No experience required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Anticipated completion, as verified by program director, from a Radiography program that is accredited by a mechanism acceptable to the ARRT.
  • Successful completion and documentation of clinical competencies and associated academic course work in the following areas: Chest, Abdomen, Spine, Cranial and Facial, Upper Extremity, Lower Extremity, Thorax, IVP, and GI procedures to include Upper GI, Small Bowel, Lower GI, and Gall Bladder.
  • Successful completion and documentation of academic course work in the following areas of study: Patient Care and Basic Radiation Safety and Protection.
  • Must possess good communication and patient care skills.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to stand for 60% of the workday.
  • Must be able to walk, lift, squat, bend, and twist.
  • Must be able to:
  • lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.
  • lift up to 20 lbs. over the head.
  • carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
  • Must be able to:
  • push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
  • perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present.
  • Must be able to use hands and feet to operate equipment.
  • Must have clear speech and good vision and hearing.
  • Will be exposed to chemicals and radiation.
  • Must wear personal protective clothing (i.e., lead aprons, isolation gowns, protective eyewear) as needed.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
