Summary of Job Duties:The Research Assistant will support Dr. Amy Sato, Assistant Professor in Physiology and Cell Biology, by managing laboratory organization, animal experimentation, and protocol compliance. Responsibilities include maintaining animal databases and colonies, drafting and overseeing animal use protocols, and ensuring regulatory adherence. The role also involves training new lab personnel in experimental and surgical procedures and overseeing lab supply orders. Additionally, the Research Assistant will coordinate lab meetings, prepare agendas and minutes, and contribute to the efficient workflow and quality standards of the lab, maintaining knowledge of federal regulations for animal research. Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in biological/ health sciences or a related field plus (3) three years of research experience required.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Reference Manager)

  • Willingness and ability to work with animals.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or related field plus three (3) years of related experience in a research lab setting.

  • Experience in laboratory procedures, management, and microbiology techniques preferred

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Reference Manager)

  • Strong animal experimentation and surgical skills.

Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Manages the overall organization of the laboratory

  • Maintains consistency in all experimental protocols

  • Participates in strategic planning of animal experimentation.

  • Ensures effective coordination of day-to-day operations and monitors the progress and performance of all experimentation (including in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo approaches).

  • Coordinates the agenda, and writes the minutes and action items for the meetings of the PI with all members of the research group (general lab meeting) and with subgroups of researchers for specific projects.

  • Works with the lab manager on all animal experimentation.

  • Performs surgical protocols in the laboratory under the direction of the lab manager, senior technicians, and postdoctoral fellows.

  • Manages mouse databases.

  • Maintains mouse colonies.

  • Performs technical procedures related to analysis of bone and muscle by histomorphometric approaches.

  • Helps the lab manager train new technical personal, fellows and students in protocols and procedures involving animals.

  • Maintains a seamless interaction with the director and personnel of the University Animal Laboratory regarding animal health and animal care charges.

  • Works with the lab manager to write/ edit animal use protocols (AUP) as necessary

  • Writes standard operating procedures for animal experimentation (SOPs)

  • Works with the lab manager in developing new AUP and SOPs as needed for new research developed by the PI

  • Assists the PI in the submission of AUPs and SOPs for institutional regulatory reviews

  • Assists the PI in the revision of AUPs and SOPs applications requested by the regulatory reviews

  • Assists the PI and the lab manager with compliance regulation and inspections.

  • Maintains controlled substance inventory.

  • Maintains records of animal experiments inventory to assure compliance of regulations.

  • Other duties as assigned.
