Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The Office of the Provost is the central administrative unit that supports all entities within the divisions of Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Research & Engagement. The Office embraces shared governance and works in an open and transparent manner, fostering a collaborative environment where institutionally minded colleagues strive to advance each other's work. We engage thoughtfully and collegially across all divisions of the University and represent the institution effectively to external partners. Our central purpose is to provide administrative leadership that facilitates the success of all UNCG faculty, staff, and students, while strengthening human capital in the Triad, state, and beyond by promoting excellence in research, creative activities, and educational programming that addresses societal needs.
Position Summary
The Senior Vice Provost serves as a key member of the Provost's team, providing effective oversight of discrete functions, leading strategic initiatives, and providing advice to the Provost on a wide range of academic issues. This role is essential for enhancing the quality and effectiveness of the institution's academic offerings and ensuring alignment with institutional goals.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates must possess an earned terminal degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in a relevant field and five years of demonstrated success in higher education in a role that involves significant faculty personnel and budget administration responsibilities. Required knowledge of and experience with faculty promotion and tenure processes and criteria may be satisfied by the candidate's successful attainment of promotion and tenure or through work in an administrative capacity supporting the unit or institutional tenure process.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of current trends in higher education, university leadership, academic program development and assessment, accreditation, faculty assignments and workload expectations in public research institutions, faculty personnel administration, faculty development, promotion and tenure practices, budgeting, and resource management.
  • Skills: Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse academic environment. Demonstrated personal and professional judgment and integrity.
  • Vision: Proven ability to think strategically and lead initiatives that enhance academic quality and student success.
  • Commitment: Candidates must demonstrate commitment to UNCG's institutional values as well as personal conscientiousness, accountability, an embrace of shared governance, and self-motivation to ensure their own job success and that of the functions they supervise. Preferred Qualifications
Preferred experience includes at least eight years of experience in academic administration, with at least five years of leadership responsibility at the level of academic department head/chair or higher.
