Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) invites applications for a full-time Patrol Officer to join our Public Safety Team! The Patrol Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment by responding to both emergency and non-emergency calls from the MSOE community and the public for assistance. This position is located on campus downtown Milwaukee. Learn more about us here.

We are currently hiring for 3rd shift - 12:00am to 8:00am Saturday through Wednesday

Essential Job Functions

  • Respond to non-emergency calls from the MSOE community and the public for assistance
  • Respond to emergency calls from the MSOE community and the public requesting police, fire, medical or other emergency services
  • Determine the nature and location of the emergency, determine priorities, and direct Public Safety Patrol Officers or other emergency personnel as necessary in accordance with established procedures
  • Enforce University parking rules and regulations
  • Enforce all University rules and regulations
  • Good verbal and written communications skills
  • React quickly and effectively to stressful situations
  • Clear and concise speech
  • Ability to handle several tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to use all standard Public Safety equipment
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as assigned
  • Must be familiar with and comply with all departmental and University policies
  • Must maintain all required licenses and permits
  • Must successfully complete all initial and ongoing required training

  • Must wear department-issued body armor while on duty


  • Must wear department-issued duty belt and all department-issued equipment while on duty



Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Cover Public Safety Communications Officers and Public Safety University Service Officer shifts as needed
  • Provide breaks for Public Safety Communications Officers and Public Safety University Service Officers during their assigned shift
  • Assist Director of Public Safety with creating department schedules
  • Public Safety department vehicle maintenance
  • Patrol campus on MSOE issued bicycle
  • Check fire extinguishers and panic alarms on campus


This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous Public Safety / Patrol Officer experience required
  • Previous firearms experience preferred
  • Previous Defense and Arrest Tactics (DAAT) preferred
  • Must possess a valid driver's license, be able to drive, and be eligible to drive vehicles per MSOE driving policy
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid State of Wisconsin Firearms Permit or meet the requirements to obtain a State of Wisconsin Firearms Permit
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid State of Wisconsin Private Security Person License
  • Must be at least 21 years of age on date of hire
  • Must not be prohibited from possessing a firearm under federal or state law
  • Must not be prohibited by a court order from possessing a firearm
  • Successful completion of background and driving checks and a psychological evaluation

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before others. Ability to effectively communicate in both written and oral form.
  • Ability to use numbers to solve problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions.


Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to patrol the campus on foot, bicycle, or in a Public Safety vehicle. The employee is required to patrol campus building during their assigned shift.
  • Occasional lifting or moving of heavy objects.


Work Environment

  • This position works both inside and outside of buildings and therefore is exposed to various temperatures and weather dynamics.
  • Uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones and radios; operates an automobile.
