Summary of Job Duties:The Senior Accountant is responsible for the proper recording and reconciliation of university bank transactions and the reconciliation of various university accounts including federal financial aid program funds. This position is governed by state and federal laws, university policies, and generally accepted accounting principles. Required Education and or Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Business, Finance, or Accounting, plus three (3) years of relevant work experience in the accounting field, including general ledger transaction and account reconciliation experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Three years of direct experience in cash management or banking;

  • One to three years of higher education experience;

  • Master's Degree in a related field.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Cash Management:

  • Reconcile cash accounts;

  • Reconcile bank accounts;

  • Record cash receipts;

  • Monitor daily cash balances;

  • Monitor outstanding checks;

  • Coordinate the resolution of errors related to ACH files, check returns, deposit correction notices, direct deposit returns, and stale dated outstanding checks with the appropriate department;

  • Follow up with departments if deposits are not booked in a timely manner;

  • Research any unclaimed deposits and work with the bank and any applicable agency to determine which department needs to record the deposit.

Federal Financial Aid:

  • Reconcile federal financial aid Title IV programs daily, monthly, and annually

  • Request funds from the US Department of Education for Pell and Campus Based Programs

  • Coordinate the reconciliation process for federal financial aid Title IV funds with the Office of Financial Aid, Student Accounts, and Graduate School

  • Monitor Federal Work Study payments

  • Create and maintain cash receipt and disbursement records for financial aid program funds

  • Request, record, and transfer administrative cost allowance payments for financial aid programs

General Accounting

  • Prepare various financial reports

  • Assist with the preparation of the annual audited financial statements

  • Perform period close activities related to cash accounts, bank accounts, and related balance sheet account

Student Accounts

  • Assist Student Accounts Accountant with the reconciliation of the Student Accounts Receivable balance.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of principles, practices, procedures, and theories of accounting;

  • Knowledge of auditing principles, practices, and procedures;

  • Knowledge of state and federal legislative processes and procedures;

  • Ability to interpret and apply laws, rules, regulations, and policies;

  • Ability to act independently and promptly to situations and events;

  • Ability to recognize critical events, develop and evaluate data, determine solutions, and make recommendations;

  • Ability to prepare written and oral communications and reports;

  • Demonstrated commitment to high professional, and ethical standards;

  • Ability to establish a good rapport and cultivate effective working relationships with administration, faculty, and staff;

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, organizational and prioritization skills with an ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
