Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.

MWD, nights, to cover Fox Lake, Elgin & Antioch

Mechanical coordinates and oversees the repair, inspection, cleaning, rebuilding, replacing and maintenance of 1,180 pieces of rolling stock used in commuter service. The department's goal is to provide safe, clean and reliable service while maintaining the fleet to the standards of the Federal Railroad Administration, Association of American Railroads, American Public Transit Association and the original equipment manufacturers.

Reporting to the Director, Metra Electric District Mechanical Department, the position will supervise Mechanical Foremen and craft employees in the Paint Shop, EMU/Car Shops, depot and storage yards in the painting of Metra's rollingstock and performance of other duties as assigned. Perform other related duties as required..

The primary duties include: Develop, implement, and coordinate procedures and schedules surface preparation and application of paint and related products on Metra's fleet of locomotives and passenger cars. Evaluate employee's work performance, train employees in painting methods and techniques, and ensure they are provided with materials and equipment needed to complete assignments. Determine suitable paint products to use in various applications and estimate time and materials. Inspects facilities enforce maintenance, cleanliness, and safety rules. Administer provisions of collective bargaining agreement including: conducting formal disciplinary conferences and investigations, and monitoring staffing levels. Approve time off, coordinate staff schedules, fill vacancies as necessary, and ensure compliance with departmental and company policies and objectives. Decide/implement staffing decisions, performance evaluations, and performance improvement, disciplinary, and/or termination procedures. Promote safe work practices and maintain and foster a safe work environment. Responsible for the safety objectives, goals, and program of the organization ensuring compliance with applicable safety rules and regulations. Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Requirements
  1. Qualified journeyman or any combination of education and/or experience may be substituted that equals four (4) years of prepping and painting, body shop technician, mechanic, or related experience.
  2. In addition to #1, must have five (5) years of professional experience prepping and painting surfaces.
  3. Must have two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  4. Considerable knowledge of tools, materials, and techniques used in the painting trade.
  5. Considerable knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
  6. Considerable knowledge of the mixing, matching, and coordinating of paint colors.
  7. Considerable skill using and maintaining tools and equipment.
  8. Considerable skill prepping and painting surfaces.
  9. Good planning and analytical skills.
  10. Good supervisory skills.
  11. Good verbal and written communication skills.
  12. Ability to understand and apply provisions of labor agreements.
  13. Ability to teach and direct others.
  14. Ability to work with contractors.
  15. Ability to exercise tact and courtesy.
  16. Must be FRA 238 certified or be able to become certified within ninety (90) days of hire
  17. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  18. Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit, for extended periods of time.
  19. Hearing/Visual acuity, far/near, depth perception, field of vision, color vision.
  20. Ability to lift and move up 40 to pounds.
  21. Must be able to operate a vehicle.
  22. Must be willing to travel within Metra's 6-county region
  23. Must be available on-call 24-hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year, including weekends and holidays.
