Min T/E Requirements
A Masters Degree is preferred in Student Development, Higher Education Administration or other related disciplines from an accredited college or university required. Two (2) years of experience in a college or university setting; demonstrated ability to develop and maintain relationships with college students; and excellent communication and project management experience. Candidates must demonstrate evidence of knowledge, understanding and experiences of personal involvement with community engagement and public service. Candidates must have the ability to work well with a diverse university student population and minority community organizations.

Primary Purpose of Organization Unit
The UNC Pembroke Leadership, Learning, and Community office will provide meaningful co- and extra-curricular developmental and educational opportunities for students to recognize their civic potential and challenge students to enrich and enhance their education experience to become responsible citizens through active, engaged service as outlined by the University's mission.
Guided by the University's Core Values, the Leadership, Learning, and Community office is committed to enhancing the overall educational experience of students by:
* Providing resources and develop opportunities where students experience and gain knowledge of social, political, and economic issues and engage communities, both local and global, through service
* Involving students in the planning, resource development and implementation of co- and extra-curricular activities
* Supporting positive educational outcomes including the ability to create, function in and maintain a socially just, culturally engaged, civically responsible, sustainable and technologically advanced community
Primary Purpose of Position
The Assistant Director position supports the University mission and the objectives of the Leadership, Learning, and Community office by developing and implementing programs and initiatives that support student development through active citizenship, community engagement and volunteer service.
Job Description
The Assistant Director for Student Engagement will be responsible for:

  • Developing and maintaining relationships with university stakeholders that enhance student success while aligning student involvement with real community needs
  • Planning, developing and implementing service programs, educational activities and events that embody volunteerism, public service and responsible citizenship,
  • Providing guidance for student engagement model
  • Evaluating and assessing program effectiveness for enhancing student retention and persistence in service involvement
  • Serve as the advisor and provide support for non-partisan student voter education organization(s).
  • Advising students on community service, civic responsibility, and civic engagement
  • Build and maintain partnerships to offer students meaningful community-based learning opportunities.
  • Coordinate and lead civic learning community, a first year service learning community
  • Maintenance of student co-curricular service transcripts via UNCP Serve volunteer platform


The Assistant Director has shared responsibility for:

  • Creating a robust campus environment by developing, managing, and coordinating experiences to engage students in special events
  • Supporting major programs and initiatives such as NAPSA Certified Peer Educator training, Hawk Camp, Days of Service, Brave Foundations mentoring program, Community Partner Symposium, and more.
  • Strengthening a comprehensive community engagement program that supports community-based learning, citizenship development, community awareness, and civic education by implementing the office's citizenship curriculum,
  • Supporting the initiatives and experiences of the Student Service Leaders
  • Marketing and social media
  • Assessing and evaluating programs affiliated with the office

Professional development is encouraged and funded. Work also includes other duties as assigned by the Director. Occasional late night and weekend work is required.
Management Preference
Candidate should have experience supervising students.
