Orange Coast College's Waterfront Campus is located 5 miles south of OCC's main campus in Newport Beach. The Waterfront Campus is one of a kind, boasting a state-of-the-art maritime training facility and a waterfront facility with boats ranging from 12 - 96 feet. The Waterfront Campus is home to programs including the School of Sailing and Seamanship - one of the largest community boating programs in the nation; the Professional Mariner Program, an accredited certificate and associates degree program for students entering the maritime industry; contract and fee-based career advancement classes for the maritime workforce; and OCC's nationally recognized intercollegiate Crew teams.
Orange Coast College is a 2021 and 2024 Center of Excellence for Domestic Maritime Workforce Training and Education (CoE) designee. The CoE designation recognizes community colleges and training institutions that prepare students for careers in our nation's maritime industry.
Summary
Performs skilled maintenance, repair, and general upkeep of College and District vessels, Waterfront Campus docks, grounds, and buildings. Oversees boat yard haul out and repairs. Performs maintenance and repair tasks requiring journey-level skill and experience. Operates sail, power, and other aquatic vessels in support of instruction, maintenance, donation program, and sea trials.
Distinguishing Career Features
The Marine Maintenance Specialist I is a journey-level position that provides instructional, technical, and maintenance support for the Waterfront Campus and all vessels and marine equipment owned by the College and District. Responsibilities blend maintenance and repair with instruction support, transport, and operation of sail, power, and other aquatic vessels.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties may vary among departments, divisions, and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following types of duties, as assigned:
- Works with faculty and instructional administrators to troubleshoot, modify, or rebuild/repair boats, yachts, and marine equipment used aboard vessels.
- Performs skilled maintenance work on District watercraft, including yacht joiner work, marine metallurgy, fiberglass construction, marine mechanics, rigging, electrical work, coating, and finishing.
- Oversees contracted service providers to ensure quality performance outcomes. Overseesboat yard haul out and repair to ensure quality performance outcomes.
- Oversees and performs daily, routine upkeep of Marine/Sailing program vessels, equipment, and the district boat yard. Inspects marine vessels to ensure safety and reliability.
- Transports marine vessels and boating equipment on the road while towing trailers with college and District vehicles.
- Prepares, plans, and schedules routine maintenance sequences to support instruction based on class and program needs.
- Performs maintenance unique to the marine environment; including, but not limited to, fabrication of hardware and operational gear, splicing of wire and rope, woodworking, and engine diagnostics and repair.
- Maintains the inventory of commonly used marine parts, fittings, fasteners, etc., prepares purchase requisitions for supplies and parts, and maintains up-to-date maintenance labor material, and service records.
- Preserves exterior and interior vessel appearance by applying chemical and special coating applications to boat topsides, performing fiberglass repairs, finishing wood accents, and repairing seating and surfaces.
- Serves as a watchstander and mariner, as required on a variety of watercraft, including large maritime vessels. If licensed, serves as the Captain/Master for vessels owned by the College and the District.
- Maintains records, prepares reports, and performs other miscellaneous clerical tasks as appropriate.
- Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.

Knowledge and Skills
- The position requires a working knowledge of the concepts associated with handling, operation, and upkeep of motor and sailing vessels and equipment.
- Requires working knowledge of waterway rules, protocols, currents, tides, depths, and weather patterns.
- Requires working knowledge of the use, maintenance, and repair of watercraft equipment.
- Requires working knowledge of appropriate safety precautions and procedures related to watercraft.
- Requires working knowledge of marine vessel coatings on aluminum and fiberglass, including chemical and special coating applications related to marine vessels.
- Requires knowledge of safe and proper handling of harmful chemicals, substances, and potentially hazardous wastes.
- Requires knowledge of woods and woodworking.
- Requires knowledge of basic inventory methods and documentation.
- Requires sufficient mathematics skills to make calculations such as metric weights, volumes, and percentages.
- Requires sufficient knowledge of computers to use common desktops and specialized applications used in supporting education.
- Requires sufficient knowledge of the English language to prepare routine correspondence, descriptions, and instructions.
- Requires knowledge of tutoring techniques including students' styles of learning.
- Requires sufficient human relations skills to guide students and student workers, and to convey technical concepts.
- Requires sensitivity to the needs of students with diverse backgrounds and abilities.

- Requires the ability to assist/instruct students in the use of equipment.
- Requires the ability to perform routine record-keeping and report-writing duties.
- Requires the ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines and manage time effectively.
- Requires the ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Requires the ability to complete required occupational safety training within a reasonable time.
- Requires the ability to work varying schedules including weekends and evenings.
- Requires the ability to obtain a USCG-issued Master's License for mechanically propelled vessels up to 100 GRT within a reasonable time frame.
Physical Abilities
- The general physical demands, working conditions, and essential job functions associated with this classification will be kept on file with the Office of Human Resources.

- The position typically requires an Associate's degree and four years of experience performing skilled marine maintenance work.
- Additional maritime training and experience may substitute for some higher education.
- Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the

Licenses and Certificates
- Requires a valid driver's license.
- The ability to obtain a U.S. Coast Guard License (100 Ton) and experience operating a variety of large and small vessels (power and sail).
Working Conditions
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors where significant safety considerations exist from physical labor, handling of medium-weight (up to 50 pounds) yet awkward materials, and chemicals.

(ON-CAMPUS - in-person position)
This is a permanent, general-funded, full-time, 12-months per year classified position. The normal hours of work will be Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with the flexibility to occasionally work extended hours and/or weekends, if necessary, to meet the department's needs.
The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.
The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.
(Salary Schedule: EE-117)

Selection Procedure
