Summary

The Professional Development Specialist is responsible for providing support of attorney professional development initiatives.

Required Education & Experience



  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • Professional development experience, preferably in a law office.
  • Strong technology skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.


Preferred Education & Experience



  • Associate or Bachelor degree preferred.
  • 2+ years of professional development experience, preferably in a large law firm.
  • Experience with viDesktop and CE Manager software.

  • Attorney Professional Development (35%)

    • Initiate, communicate, and handle logistics with CLE team, EPIQ, Office Services, Hospitality, and other departments for the implementation of University Stinson and other attorney professional development training programs throughout all offices, including the Deposition Skills and Trial Skills multi-day workshops, and other workshops.
    • Support new attorney orientation by organizing and monitoring conference rooms, audio/video equipment, Zoom webinars, materials, and meals, as directed by the Professional Development Manager.
    • Initiate, communicate, and handle logistics with CLE team, EPIQ, Office Services, Hospitality, and other departments for the annual implementation of the Lawyering Institute associate on-boarding/orientation program.
    • Review and approve reimbursement requests for University Stinson and programming expenses.
    • Communicate and coordinate with other department personnel to support Well-being, Diversity & Inclusion, Business Development and other cross-department trainings, programming and initiatives.
    • Initiate updates of Attorney Professional Development Department and Committee intranet pages as directed.
    • Provide support as needed with professional development initiatives including the Associate Competency Engagement program.




  • Associate Development & Mentoring Committee (ADMC) (5%)

    • Track mentor matches and mentor match changes for associates. Coordinate logistics for mentoring events. Draft communication to mentors and mentees communication Mentoring Program information.
    • Schedule ADMC monthly and other meetings as directed. Track attendance, attend monthly meetings, and draft minutes for meetings.
    • Review and approve reimbursement requests for ADMC and mentoring events.
    • Identify and assist with other tasks as needed.


  • Associate Evaluation Process (35%)

    • Collaborate with Technology team, Attorney Professional Development team members and Associate Evaluation Committee (AEC) members, for organization and support of the annual evaluation process for non-partner time-keepers.
    • Communicate with Division and Practice Group leaders to organize and monitor annual evaluation meetings for non-partner timekeepers (collaborating with Paralegal Manager), and Spring Check-In meetings for Associates and Staff Attorneys. Arrange annual AEC meeting including preparation of evaluation materials. Maintain and update tracking spreadsheet and calendar appointments, as needed.
    • Draft communications and prepare complex supporting documents (i.e., tables, training compilation reports, biographies, consensus summaries, full evaluation materials, including emails received throughout the year, feedback forms, and prior-year final evaluations) for use by Leadership, Division Leaders, and AEC members.
    • Schedule and support annual non-partner timekeepers' review meetings.
    • Create and maintain confidential spreadsheets of statistical information, including underlying evaluation materials and final evaluation materials available to non-partner timekeepers as requested.
    • Collect evaluation materials as supplied throughout the year for inclusion in annual review process.
    • Respond to Division Leaders inquiries throughout the year regarding timekeepers' performance documentation.
    • Review and approve reimbursement requests for AEC activities.
    • Assist as needed with other non-partner evaluation process tasks.


  • Associate Competencies Engagement Program (ACE) (5%)

    • Provide reporting and Associate information to the Practice Development Counsels to support ACE initiatives as requested.
    • Communicate with Technology team, Practice Development Counsels, Professional Development team, and Diversity & Inclusion departures for generating reports and providing information.
    • Work with Information Services/Business Engineering on individual Associate trackers and software implementation to support ACE program.


  • Data Reporting and Analysis (15%)

    • Create, update, and maintain statistics for new and departed attorneys, mentor matches, new partner candidates, practice division assignments, judicial clerkship information, and practice area specialties as requested.
    • Respond to inquiries for attorney data for Leadership and other departments, including Diversity & Inclusion, Pro Bono, Well-Being, and Marketing, and respond to other ad hoc requests. In coordination with other Professional Development team members, draft bar examiner requests for approval by division leaders.
    • Draft monthly attorney staffing report.
    • Monitor and update lists of associates on Alternative Work Schedule agreements.
    • Create and analyze other spreadsheets, documents, and forms in response to requests by Leadership and other departments.
    • Schedule meetings and track attendance for Litigation Associates Group monthly meetings, in collaboration with the Litigation Associates Group division leader.
    • Provide additional analysis and reporting as needed.


  • General and Administrative (5%)

    • Perform other duties as assigned.
