Managing Clerk / Senior Paralegal
Steptoe LLP is seeking a Managing Clerk/Senior Paralegal. The Managing Clerk plays a critical role in overseeing all aspects of court filings and docket management within the New York office of the firm. The position is focused on ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of state and local court filings, while supporting lawyers in meeting critical legal deadlines. Also responsible for overseeing court electronic filings firm-wide and acting as a senior litigation paralegal.
Essential Functions
Managing Clerk Functions
- Oversee the docketing and calendaring of legal deadlines for state and local courts, primarily in New York, ensuring compliance with all relevant rules and regulations.
- Coordinate the preparation and filing of court documents, including e-filings and physical filings, in federal, state and local courts.
- Assist with the maintenance and updating of case management systems and databases with accurate filing and deadline information.
- Liaise with court personnel, attorneys, paralegals, and other business professionals to facilitate the smooth and timely progression of cases.
- Assist with the preparation of legal documents and ensure proper formatting and compliance with court requirements.
- Monitor changes in court rules and procedures and ensure lawyers and business professionals are informed and compliant.
- Provide training and support to paralegals and other business professionals on best practices for court filings and docket management.
E-Filing Responsibilities
- Oversee the preparation, submission, and tracking of all electronic court filings, ensuring compliance with court rules and deadlines.
- Develop and maintain a robust electronic document management system to organize and store all filed documents securely and efficiently.
- Work closely with lawyers, paralegals, and other business professionals to ensure accurate and timely filings, provide training on e-filing procedures, and address any filing-related issues.
- Coordinate with other offices, including e-filing, docketing, paralegal, and LEA personnel, to ensure consistency in practices and procedures firm-wide.
Paralegal Responsibilities
- Draft, proofread, cite check, and manage legal documents, ensuring compliance with court rules and e-filing procedures.
- Conduct and analyze research in support of case strategy.
- Prepare and respond to discovery requests, manage document reviews, and conduct investigations using eDiscovery tools.
- Prepare trial materials, organize exhibits, coordinate witnesses, and provide on-site support during trials and hearings.
Nonessential Functions
- Assist with pro bono and business development projects
- Complete other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Prior experience in a law firm or legal environment, with specific experience in New York court filings; docket/calendaring experience preferred.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a legal or administrative role.
- In-depth knowledge of state and local court rules and procedures, particularly in New York.
- Proficiency in legal docketing software and Microsoft Office Suite.

Work Environment
- Available to work in the office 9:00 - 5:30 pm Monday through Friday.
- Hybrid work arrangements may be available for this position

The anticipated base salary for this position is $110,000. The actual base salary offered will be dependent upon the applicant's experience and qualifications, as well as other job-related factors, including but not limited to, relevant skills, education, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, geographic location.
