POSITION SUMMARY
The Food Access & Delivery Specialist (Specialist) will provide services to individuals and families in need of emergency food through food distribution, surplus food collection and delivery, and delivery of home food boxes. This position will support on-going activities of La Canasta Familiar, CLUES pop-up food shelf pantry program. The Specialist's primary responsibility includes collecting and delivering surplus food from grocery stores, and other local food providers, to various food distribution sites. The Specialist will also support with data entry and analysis, promoting additional health initiatives in the community, and providing back-up coverage for the Food Access team. By doing so, the Specialist will play a key part in reducing food waste and ensuring food reaches those in need.

Location: CLUES St. Paul and Minneapolis, MN Offices

Position Type: Regular

Schedule: Part-Time, 20 hours/week. Generally, Saturday-Sunday, with some weekday & evening hours.

Estimated Pay: $20.00 to $22.25 (depending on experience & qualifications).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Food Rescue & Delivery

  • Safely operate company vehicles (i.e., refrigerated truck, etc.) to collect food donations from various grocery stores and food providers.
  • Adhere to collection schedules and routes as directed by the Nutrition & Food Equity Manager.
  • Inspect donated food items for quality and safety, ensuring all food complies with health and safety standards.
  • Load, transport, and unload food surplus and food donations at designated sites.
  • Maintain accurate logs of pickups and deliveries.
  • Provide excellent customer service and build relationships with participating grocery stores and food providers. Maintain strong relationships with donors by quickly solving any problems or answering questions.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and maintenance of company vehicles, including regular inspections.
  • Follow all local traffic laws and safety guidelines to ensure safe and timely delivery of food.
  • Collaborate with the food access team to identify ways to improve the efficiency and impact of the food rescue process.
  • Assist in identifying and soliciting prospective donors.
  • Deliver Canasta Familiar home delivery boxes and distribute to participate homes facing food insecurity.
  • Assist with preparation and distribution of food for weekly deliveries.
  • Organize, plan, and prepare for weekly La Canasta Familiar Program delivery activities and distributions.


Food Shelf Distribution & Operations

  • Support a dynamic, engaging, and welcoming environment for all program participants and volunteers.
  • Stock and replenish food during La Canasta Familiar service hours, ensuring products are distributed as needed to participants.
  • Support incoming and outgoing food stream and flow, including adequate food internal and external food distribution deliveries.
  • Ensure products are properly sorted, organized, and checked for quality.
  • Stock shelves, rotate food products, and maintain an organized and clean space.
  • Ensure safe handling of food complying with local health and safety standards.
  • Assist Food Access Specialist with inventory and ordering of food from CLUES distribution partner sites.
  • Support with ensuring food products are stored in a safe and secure manner consistent with food safety regulations.
  • Assist with food and product waste, complying with compost, trash and recycling guidelines.


General Duties


  • Complete data entry and analysis, such as inputting participant information and Canasta Familiar optional surveys, for successful submission of monthly statistical reports.


  • Support Nutrition & Food Equity Manager to ensure that compliance with federal regulations set forth by Department of Human Services, Second Harvest Heartland, TEFAP, etc.


  • Maintain safety and security by following all health and safety procedures.


  • Collaborate with other CLUES programs and departments to integrate programs and resources.


  • Actively participate in the achievement of program goals and objectives, including department and/or agency-wide activities and events.


  • Understand, support and promote the mission, operating values and agency services of CLUES within the community.


  • Exercise sensitivity when working with diverse populations.


  • Maintain client confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, agency policies and other applicable laws, regulations and ethical standards.


  • Acknowledge and identify the boundaries of position and refer to support resources as appropriate when the situation merits.


  • Maintain open communication with supervisors and solicit feedback when necessary.


  • Participate in assigned training and department activities as required.


  • Carry out other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities for CLUES employees but may supervise volunteers and/or interns for food access and nutrition programming.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education, Experience & Key Abilities*


  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.


  • 1-3 years of experience in commercial driving, completing deliveries, and/or transportation logistics required.


  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including early weekend mornings, evenings, and weekends.


  • Physical ability to bend, lift, and carry up to 30+ pounds, load and unload boxes and bags, and walk or stand for long periods of time.


  • Bilingual in Spanish and English with cultural sensitivity and awareness required.


  • Experience preferred in one or more of the following: Logistics/operations, food handling, and/or nonprofit work.


  • Experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse individuals in a service-oriented environment preferred.


  • High level of personal accountability for the quality and impact of work.


  • Must complete food safety, civil rights, pallet jack and trail lift gate training within 14 days of employment.


  • Excellent communication skills, professional demeanor, sound judgment, and strong organizational skills.


  • Office administrative experience preferred.




*Equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.

Language Skills

  • Effective communication in English and Spanish, both verbally and in writing required.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret written materials, maintain accurate documentation, and respond appropriately to questions and requests.


Transportation

  • Must have access to use a reliable motor vehicle for independent transportation, valid driver's license, proof of automotive insurance, and maintain a good driving record. Must submit to and pass annual recertification of compliance with CLUES Automobile and Transportation Policy and driving record check.


Computer Skills

  • Proficient working knowledge of email software, the Internet, databases, and common Windows-based programs, including Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint required.
  • Must be willing to attend training to advance technical skills and maintain appropriate skill levels to perform job duties.


WORKING CONDITIONS
Background check

  • Must pass a criminal background check and driving record check. As a condition of continued employment, staff person may be required to submit to periodic re-verification of these, and additional background checks.
