Mechanical Design Engineer - Systems with five years experience and a minimum of a B.S. in Engineering or similar course of study

Location: Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, or New York; relocation assistance may be available. Facility is physically located in Export, Pennsylvania

Mission/Purpose of the Job:

Develop and maintain leadership and technical knowledge in executing orders / projects received for standard and customized vacuum pump systems offered and sold by the North American Systems and Solutions business including the ownership and accountability of the entire Design Engineering process from beginning to end. This position must exhibit a team centric mental culture including the ability to manage critical workflow and provide horizontal leadership within the entire Systems and Solutions team establishing a strong foundation for elevation into a Design Engineering Lead Position within 1-2 years.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Manage, own, and coordinate the Design Engineering process for assigned projects, including the the Stage Gate reviews (Design Review, Safey Review, and Project Closure) and with full documention and acitons.

  • Manage and drive results for successfully meeting or improving target quoted hours, target release dates, and project absorption hour percentages.

  • Develop and maintain ability to select and coordinate appropriate Atlas Copco/Edwards/Leybold products with assistance from Proposal/Project Engineers to meet customer Design Engineering requirements.

  • Work with Proposal/Project Engineers to interpret vacuum systems sold and prepare applicable engineering and design documentation including final P&ID, general and detailed drawings and bills of material for the manufacture of Industrial & Scientific Vacuum Systems, with some concentrating on customer's required specifications.

  • Review and interpret all technical specifications and incorporate all applicable requirements as outlined in the purchase order / contract.

  • Manage creation of 3D models, BOM's and applicable routings for designated projects in conjunction with MRP/ERP software parameters (SAP currently).

  • Manage all applicable external Design Engineering work with owning and coordinating the workflow ensuring compliance with project targets and scope. This includes Global collaboration as well.

  • Directly supervise resources and deliverables (mechanical design, engineering FEA analysis, stress calculations, etc..) outsourced to outside suppliers from around the globe such as Gecia.

  • Supervise and manage scheduling for oustide work, holding outside engineering consultants accountable for OTD.

  • Manage completion of all appropriate calculations (stress, deflection, water and gas flow, etc) for the applicable design whether performed in house or through external resources.

  • Manage maintenance of various drawing files and customer documents through MRP/ERP system, including owning and coordinating drawing/document submittals per project schedules.

  • Own and manage coordination with Operations group to facilitate the manufacturing and assembly process and clarify design issues as required, including owning, leading, and managing the red-line process and completing shop support when applicable.

  • Engineer and define material with development of consistent bills of materials, focussing on meeting both delivery and cost targets through product commonality and other means. This includes owning and managing the overall Design, meeting or exceeding Safety regulations based upon the project scope.

  • Own and manage coordination with Supply Chain and, as required, with suppliers (domestic and global) in answering technical questions for facilitating the purchasing/procurement process.

  • Own and manage coordination with QA/QC department in defining and driving all aspects of quality assurance and control related to the projects, including ITPs, applicable items for QM Lot designation, and special testing requirements when necessary.

  • Own and manage coordination with Project Manager in communicating overall progress of projects and any relevant issues surfacing during the execution of a project, especially when affecting any relative milestone date or critical target release function.

  • Own and manage the process of ensuring knowledge and understanding of customer design requirements and specific issues is communicated to all relevant parties.

  • Own and manage coordination with internal and external assemblers to ensure safety and cost-effective quality in the manufacturing and assembly process.

  • Own and manage troubleshooting and implementing required changes in resolving manufacturing and field problems ultimately providing improvement in product performance and reliability.

  • Ability to support othe S+S entities around the world (Europe, India and China) when required.

  • Manage all aspects of ERP requirements, including material master entries, developing approriate routings and BOM creation and maintenance.

  • Work with outside suppliers to obtain quotes, optimize costs and maximize value.

  • Manage and drive Continuous Improvement within the Design Engineering process ensuring the highest quality product while meeting cost and delivery targets.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, use stairways to climb to multiple floors within office building, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands and fingers to type or dial, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and reach with hands and arms.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. This position requires frequent computer use. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

This position requires the following:

  • Occasional travel for 20% of the position; minimal overnight or multiple day trips.

  • Hybrid work schedule consisting of 2 days in office and 3 days remote work. This is conditional based upon project loading and scheduling resulting in possbile higher frequency of office days.

Skills/Knowledge/Experience:

Education Level

  • A minimum of an Engineering Degree (B.S. Engineering or similar) or relevant experience is required within the Design Enigneering function.

Relevant Previous Experience

  • Direct, related 5 years minimum experience is preferred with a preference in mechanical engineering, engineering management and vacuum technology background.

  • Proven professional experience in project coordination or project management in relation to ownership and accountability of processes and team members.

  • 3D modeling experience required and strong Pro-E/Creo and Inventor/Vault proficiency is desired.

  • SAP experience strongly desired with working professional knowledge for applicable T-Code sessions and standard process flow.

  • Ability to work with outside vendors for cost estimates and design optimization

Knowledge Areas/Skills

  • Mechanical aptitude and the ability to read electrical schematics and motor controls knowledge.

  • Must have results driven nature.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.

  • Skill in the use of other CAD platforms is desired.

  • Strong familiarity with Microsoft Office is desired.

  • Vacuum technology experience or knowledge preferred.

  • Strong organizational skills

Compensation:

The starting salary for this role differs based on the employee's primary work location. Employees typically do not start at the top of the range, though compensation depends on everyone's qualifications.

Location Based Pay Ranges:

$63,866 - $109,496 in this state: NY

$55,536 - $95,218 in this state: OH
