General Responsibilities |
The Disability Support Services Counselor's function is to assist in ensuring programmatic and physical accessibility for students with disabilities. This position works closely with students to provide academic advising and determine reasonable accommodations based on their disability documentation. The counselor also works closely with faculty and staff in providing these accommodations and ensuring accessibility. |
Work Performed |
The counselor must be able to multi-task in a fast pace environment as the
DSS Office serves over 600 students with disabilities each semester with the equivalent of four full time counselors. |

Other Knowledge Required |
Master's degree in Counseling, Special Education or related field
Demonstrated knowledge of laws protecting persons with disabilities such as the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
Experience assessing students' documentation of disability and prescribing accommodations, preferably on the college level
Experience providing advocacy and counseling to persons with disabilities, preferably on the college level
Knowledge of Microsoft applications including Word, Excel and Access
OTHER

Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written skills; ability to work with a team Regular attendance is a requirement of this job
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality

HCC offers two retirement options: The Pension, which requires a 7% employee contribution and The
ORP, a 403(b) with a 7.25% employer contribution only. Employees in positions that do not require a bachelor's degree must participate in The Pension. Employees that possess a bachelor's degree and hold professional positions that require a bachelor's degree may choose to participate in either The Pension or The
