HF Sinclair in Artesia, NM is seeking a Process Controls Engineer. This position works in the Refining Integrity Team is responsible for the development, implementation, and monitoring of APC strategies for HollyFrontier that improves the refineries safety, profitability and efficiency.

Job Duties

  • Develop, implement, and monitor control strategies that improve refinery safety, profitability and efficiency
  • Provide day-to-day support for process control related issues that impact unit operation
  • Identify opportunities and develop advanced process control (APC) applications
  • Maintain, troubleshoot and document existing advanced controls to maximize performance
  • Perform monthly performance metric reporting for advanced process control application
  • Provide advice, training and present developing initiatives in advanced process control
  • Provide site support for APC during off-hours with travel to sites as needed
  • Identify and develop new control applications by utilizing emerging technologies
  • Work closely with DCS specialists and technicians
  • Participate in Refinery Integrity improvement teams
  • Participate as needed in plant Process Safety Management, by supporting Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), action item follow-up and PSSR (Pre-Startup Safety Reviews)
  • Use statistical methods to develop process inferentials for use in advanced controls



Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their manager, as determined from timeto time in their sole and complete discretion.

Experience

A minimum of 10+ years of experience with APC (step testing, modeling, commissioning, and day to day support) is required.



  • Knowledge of Burner Management Systems Integration is required.


  • Current knowledge of APC work processes and scope/deliverables for the various project phases, and business acumen for lump sum and cost plus projects is required.

Education Level

A minimum of a BS Degree is required.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in the development of all APC related deliverables; including step testing plans, working with sites to develop APC program, model identification, implementation of APC on live units, monitoring of APC to determine model performance, update P&IDs, develop documentation for APC for each unit, etc.
  • Thorough understanding of P&ID symbology and presentation techniques.
  • Previous experience with various phases of vendor selection and technical negotiation.
  • Technical expert in area of specialty. Advanced ability to stay abreast of new technology developments and processes and apply knowledge analytically.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products (e.g., Access, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and commonly used engineering concepts and experience with engineering software.
  • Familiarity with standards and practices of the specific discipline.
  • Strong ability to effectively communicate with others, both written and verbal communication, advanced reading and writing skills, with the ability to perform advanced mathematical calculations.

Work Conditions

Office and plant based with up to 20% travel by land and air required. Petroleum refinery, warehouse/plant environment, and out-of-doors environment including but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, rotating equipment, wet and/or oil contaminated conditions, at both below grade and elevated positions, and working in confined spaces. Subject to all temperatures, weather and varying road conditions.

Physical Requirements

Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, lifting and/or carrying up to 50 lbs, climbing up to 200 ft, perceiving color differences, required to wear personal protective equipment as needed and a respirator in emergency situations (beards not permitted).Job conditions may require twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching or grasping.
