Job Description Summary:Conduct whole-atmosphere model simulations and data analysis to investigate the thermosphere and ionosphere system's electrodynamics, dynamics, temperature, and composition.

The model employed will be the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere/ionosphere eXtension (WACCM-X).

Data sources will include, but are not limited to, thermospheric composition and electron density measurements from the NASA Global-scale Observations of Limb and Disk (GOLD) mission, data from the NASA Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON)mission, incoherent scatter radars, COSMIC-2, and ground-based GPS total electron content. This research is directed by an NCAR staff member. Position Details:

What You Will Do

Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform model runs, analyze simulation results, and compare with observational results.

  • Analyze datasets, including, but not limited to, thermosphere composition datasets, electron density and ion drift data, and GPS TEC; compare with model-simulated results.

  • Write reports and publish papers.

  • Prepare for and attend scientific conferences.

Who We'd Love To Join Our Team

Successful candidates will ensure their application materials speak to the following criteria:

Education & Experience REQUIRED:

  • Ph. D. in physics, space science, atmospheric physics, or a related field.

Preference is given to those who are seeking their first fellowship and have held a PhD for no more than three (3) years from the application deadline. Applicant must have a PhD degree granted.

Education & Experience Desired but Not Required:

  • Experience with Python, Matlab, or Mathematica

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities REQUIRED:

  • Ability to pursue thermospheric and ionospheric research, including modeling and data analysis.

  • Strong computational skills.

  • Familiarity with Unix/Linux operating systems (clusters and supercomputers).

  • Proficient in Fortran and IDL programming languages

  • Good communication skills in presenting research

  • Ability to write scientific articles and make scientific presentations.

  • Publication record in the field of thermospheric and ionospheric physics.
