Introduction

The Loudoun County, Virginia, Department of Planning & Zoning is seeking an experienced professional planner to manage the discretionary review process of land development applications in a large and expanding multifaceted community that is leading growth in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.


Job Summary

The Department is focused on providing high quality customer service and offers unique opportunities to gain in-depth and diverse experiences in the planning profession, to include: reviewing and processing a variety of land development applications for rural, historic, suburban, and urban portions of the county, administering a new Zoning Ordinance that implements the County's comprehensive plan, developing solutions to a broad range of complex land use issues such as affordable housing, sustainability, data centers, renewable energy, and energy storage and engaging in community outreach to ensure equitable planning and zoning practices.

The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of land use planning and development and will be able to coordinate with other departments and agencies, meet deadlines while managing multiple assignments, and present cohesive technical analysis to decision-makers. This position supports the implementation of the Loudoun Comprehensive Plan vision and is part of the planning team that will guide the evolution of walkable urban places near the County's metro stations.

This position is eligible for a $6,000 hiring bonus in accordance with the County's Hiring and Retention Bonus Program.

Hiring salary is commensurate with experience.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Planning, Management, Public Administration, Urban Management, Architecture, Business Administration, Landscape Architecture, Geography, or related field; three (3) years of related work experience in professional planning preferably in a government setting including one (1) year of professional planning experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

This position requires an analytical thinker with practical knowledge of land planning, zoning, building and site design, and resource preservation. The ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks and meet critical deadlines is required. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills as well as the ability to adapt to a variety of situations including frequent interactions with staff, applicants, top governmental officials, and citizens. Skill using industry-standard planning software such as 3D modeling programs, graphic design applications, and ArcGIS is strongly preferred. Presenting at periodic evening meetings and workshops is required.

This position requires a valid driver's license, driving record check, criminal, and credit check. Teleworking two (2) days per week is an option after a training period. Relocation assistance is available to successful candidates who live more than forty (40) miles away.
