Job Description
Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western Community College is seeking to fill a full-time Campus Police Officer to provide protection of persons and property for the college campus and adjacent or surrounding streets and properties. Services include response that is provided with professionalism and courtesy. The officer will work with the campus and surrounding community to educate students, staff and faculty to support and foster a safe and secure learning environment. The officer will provide law enforcement and services by daily patrol of campus property on foot and in vehicle, enforce college policies and regulations, and to create an environment of safety and security for all persons and property. The officer will secure all buildings on campus as needed, will check buildings for problems and report such discoveries to the appropriate on-call personnel.

The officer will provide information, directions, and assistance to the campus and surrounding community, and promote compliance with college parking and traffic regulations; direct and control traffic as needed, will conduct investigations of vehicular accidents, thefts, and response to other incidents as necessary. The officer will transport funds to and from area bank; and will check and report campus conditions during times of inclement weather.

Full-time Law Enforcement Officers will be mandatorily enrolled in the VaLORS retirement plan administered by the Virginia Retirement System. As a Virginia State government employee many employment benefits are offered at a low cost; or are afforded at no cost, such as but are not limited to basic life insurance, the Virginia Sickness and Disability Program, and up to 6 credit hours per academic semester tuition free for courses administered by Virginia Western Community College provided the terms of a promissory note are met.
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
Must possess an unexpired Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services ( DCJS) Law Enforcement Officer certification, maintain the certification, and have a valid Virginia driver's license. Applicants are required to upload a copy of the unexpired Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement Officer certificate to their application for this position. Considerable knowledge of public safety and security laws, legal codes, as well as regulations and equipment, gained through experience as a certified law enforcement officer. Experience providing oral and written instructions and procedures. Experience writing, proofreading, and editing written reports. Experience reacting appropriately in emergency situations. Must be able to work all shifts and carrying equipment and performing foot and vehicle patrols. Applicants must be available to work a flexible 12-hour work schedule, including evening hours, weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.
