GENERAL SUMMARY: Provides hospital-wide coordination of essential functions that include patient placement, resource/staffing allocation and adjustment, staff supervision, emergency/disaster coordination and administrative liaison in collaboration with the Leadership Team. Responsible for operations in the absence of higher leadership. Contacts leadership at any level for advice, updates, or to summon on-site assistance. Adjusts staff members for high census or emergency/disaster situations and dismisses/reschedules scheduled staff based on objective and subjective assessments of the various areas' needs and their budgeted staff requirements. PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values. 2. *Responsible for bed planning for incoming patients, ensures rooms are available and becomes a liaison to admissions. Coordinates with physicians, clinical areas and outside facilities. 3. * Provides interdepartmental coordination of admissions, boarders and patient flow activity. 4. *Collaborates with Nurse Managers and the Nursing Support Manager, or designees, to appropriately allocate final staffing resources for current and future shifts; aligns resources to make staffing decisions based on appropriate skill mix, expertise, cost effectiveness and patient acuity requirements. 5. *Attends, and may conduct, staffing and briefing meetings to appropriately plan for staffing decisions; collaborates with other managers, or designees, during each shift to appropriately coordinate staffing based on patient care needs. 6. *Provides directions to charge nurses to anticipate and meet daily staffing requirements. 7. Facilitates employee/patient incident identification reporting and follow-up as needed. 8. Directs hospital-wide staff in safety/security issues (i.e., activates the Command Center) until relieved by an appropriate leadership person. 9. Responds to hospital emergencies on an immediate basis when on duty (if summoned by the Command Center while off duty, will make every effort to return to the Medical Center to assist in emergency/disaster situations). 10. Is promptly notified of the Emergency Department's request to go on diversion and is responsible to report any diversion activity promptly to the appropriate personnel. 11. Provides relevant and operational information to members of the leadership team as appropriate, including Senior Management; completes an accurate and thorough report using the online system to assure that members of leadership have a current and broad understanding of census, activity, and unusual events that have occurred within their scheduled shift. 12. Participates in high-risk patient/family needs assessment, interventions and evaluation, and may summon on-call support such as security or Care Management Social Workers as needed. 13. *Facilitates conflict resolution between staff, clinicians and patients/families, reports incidents of conflict to the appropriate chain of command. 14. Incorporates and supports cultural considerations into the delivery of care; participates in arranging for communication needs for persons with disabilities. 15. *Mentors staff in their development of critical thinking and skill application to the nursing process; serves as a resource for clinical decision-making. 16. *Monitors hospital environment for compliance with federal and state laws and other regulatory standards. 17. Participates in nursing leadership activities, division meetings, and hospital-wide committees and projects as assigned. 18. Advances work knowledge by participating in continuing education in services, reading periodicals/literature and seeking ongoing development opportunities. 19. Direct admissions through care process not related to emergency services; Includes information gathering, communication with floor staff and facilitates patient admissions. 20. Backup staff to all areas including admissions/discharges, patient triage, housekeeping, other departments and physicians as needed. 21. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned. Attach Addendum for positions with slightly different roles or work-specific differences as needed. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Maintains clinical competency as required for position including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patient's growth and development needs and annual skill competency verification. 2. Knowledge of staff scheduling methods and processes. 3. Knowledge of federal and state regulations related to nursing and practice/service areas. 4. Knowledge of nursing and hospital systems. 5. Knowledge of individual and group behavior management, and quality improvement principles and techniques. 6. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions. 7. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 8. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information. 9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with health care team members and diverse patient/family populations. 10. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment related to changing patient needs including working with patients with acute, chronic, and complex disease processes and those who are dying. 11. Ability to balance and prioritize diverse management and clinical responsibilities. 12. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act. Bachelor's degree in Nursing and participation in progressive education or certification in area of expertise preferred. Minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience managing clinical populations required. Prior management or supervisory experience desired. OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS: Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network. ACLS and PALS certification required within 6 months of employment |
