Under the supervision of the Blood Bank Manager, performs a wide variety of Blood Bank testing in an accurate and timely fashion by utilizing technical and problem-solving skills, in conjunction with a thorough knowledge of the principles and instrumentation for methods used in Blood Bank. Cooperatively and proactively assists in other areas as needed in a teamwork-oriented environment. Maintains effective communication with employees while following CHAMP and HRO standards. Maintains all Quality Control and Quality Assurance standards at all times. Maintains operational effectivenessand assumes full responsibility for continuing education requirements, licensure and expertise to adapt as needed to an expanding department with increased testing complexity.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Accepts, prepares and assesses clinical specimens.
    • 1.1 Verifies the name on tube or specimen with requisition. Investigates and documents all findings related to discrepancies.
  • 2. Performs all testing and related calculations.
    • 2.1 Organizes workload, minimizing specimen processing delays and maximizing efficiency in processing tests as observed by manager.
  • 3. Evaluates and reports results.
    • 3.1 Demonstrates an appropriate level of understanding of scientific aspects of laboratory testing as observed by manager.
  • 4. Participates in additional activities that are necessary to satisfy department needs and requirements.
    • 4.1 Assists in implementing changes in existing or new procedures designated by departmental needs as indicated by feedback and as observed by manager.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Bachelor of Science of Bachelor of Arts in Medical Laboratory Science/Medical or equivalent with accredited clinical laboratory rotation.

EXPERIENCE

One to two years' experience in an accredited clinical laboratory preferred.

LICENSURE

MLS (ASCP) certification or equivalent or eligible.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Proficiency in office applications, Knowledge in hospital and laboratory information systems preferred. Must possess excellent communication skills and ability to communicate in an effective and professional manner with hospital staff. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills are required. The ability to work as a member of a team is essential.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands with dexterity and be able to talk and hear. The are occasionally required to stand' walk' and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. They must lift and or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, depth perception. and ability to adjust focus. They are occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must be tested for color blindness and be able to make necessary accommodations to perform testing accurately. incumbents as well as external and internal applicants who become disabled must be able to perform the essential job function with or without the assistance of reasonable accommodation as determined on a case by case basis.


Additional Information

HOURS: Full time; Evenings 3p-11:30pm

BS Medical Technology ASCP or equivalent, Blood Bank experience preferred
