Medical Laboratory Scientists/Medical Technologists work in the Blood Bank as part of a team and report to Lead Medical Lab Scientists, Assistant Chief Technologist, and Lab Manager. Blood Bank MLS demonstrate ability to perform a wide variety of routine and some special technical procedures in the Blood Bank Laboratory. They are responsible for handling and processing specimen, accurately reporting test results, and maintaining patient information in the laboratory information system. Medical Technologist are also responsible for the appropriate selection and modification of blood products, as well as accurate issuing and distribution. They demonstrate good time management, organizational, and communication skills. Interpret data based on knowledge and experience. Evaluate, troubleshoot, and solves routine problems. Participate in quality control, quality assurance, and equipment maintenance programs in the laboratory. Medical Technologists work efficiently and effectively to ensure safe and timely transfusion therapy.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Technical Competency: demonstrates technical competency in the assessment of samples, performance of routine and complex testing, component selection and preparation, and distribution of blood products.
    • 1.1 Follows the established blood product and sample handling guidelines and standard precautions.
  • 2. Provides for the accurate and efficient flow of information in the Blood Bank by demonstrating communication, recordkeeping, computer, and documentation skills as well as a high degree of customer service.
    • 2.1 Provides accurate information and effective communication for patient handoff to Blood Bank team. Document important information in the communication logs immediately and review routinely.
  • 3. Performs additional laboratory support responsibilities to ensure reliable operations within the Blood Bank.
    • 3.1 Performs a variety of ancillary functions in support of laboratory operations as requested.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE

One (1) to two (2) years' experience in an accredited Clinical Laboratory preferred.

LICENSURE

MT (ASCP) or BB (ASCP) certification or eligible.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Working knowledge of equipment, instrumentation, serological testing, blood product components, and materials used in a Clinical Laboratory.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

Standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time during high volume census. Lifting 25 lbs. and the opening and
closing of sample carriers. Working knowledge of computer systems and medical terminology. Typing experience
required. Excellent customer service skills required to include: communication skills, telephone skills and
interpersonal skills. Excellent attention to detail is a must. Must be able to perform multiple tasks and have the
ability to prioritize. Flexibility in scheduling will be required.
