Delivers direct spiritual care to the hospital's patients/families/staff designed to address the spiritual factors which impact on their healthy functioning and/or recovery. Communicates effectively with other hospital staff and community clergy about ongoing spiritual care needs. Documents all interventions and maintains appropriate patient records. Responsibilities

  • 1. Provides appropriate ministry to patients/families/staff.
    • 1.1 Reviews medical record to identify potential spiritual needs as measured by documentation in patients' charts.
  • 2. Maintains effective, open communication with all members of the health care team and other hospital staff.
    • 2.1 Functions as an active, contributing member of an inter-disciplinary team as measured by supervisory observation and feedback.
  • 3. Maintains appropriate patient records as mandated by department policies and JCAHO standards.
    • 3.1 Completes daily entries in patients' charts and on call log as indicated by weekly random review and supervisoryobservation.
  • 4. Develops and maintains positive working relationships with community clergy and congregations.
    • 4.1 Facilitates integration of community clergy in the delivery of direct chaplaincy services to appropriate patients/families as measured by supervisory observation.
  • 5. Expands professional competency through participation in ongoing training activities.
    • 5.1 Attends select training programs in such area as pastoral care, ethics, crisis intervention and program developmentas measured by supervisory observation.
  • 6. Promotes and maintains positive customer relations.
    • 6.1 Demonstrates courteous, helpful and professional manner towards customer as observed by supervisor and as indicated by feedback.
  • 7. Complies with hospital-wide standards of practice in the following areas.
    • 7.1 Attends and participates in mandatory in-services and consistently follows proper safety and emergency policies and procedures as measured by supervisory observation and feedback.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

An undergraduate degree is strongly encouraged. A master's degree in theology, religious studies or related area is preferred. Preference will be given to those possessing a Masters of Religion or Masters of Divinity degree from an accredited school with A.A.T.A. or requisite national academic accrediting body. Good standing with denomination or faith group; ordained, lay or professed,. Eligible for certification or certifiable by the Assoc. of Professional Chaplains.

EXPERIENCE

Functioning for some time as a chaplain in a hospital or in a comparable setting.

LICENSURE

At least four units of ACPE Clinical Pastoral Education are required. For certain candidates who meet the other educational and experiential qualifications and for whom completing the CPE requirements is not practically possible, such as a diocesan Roman Catholic priest, two units of CPE may be acceptable. That determination will be based on an interview with the department leadership.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Incumbent as well as external and internal applicants who become disabled must be able to perform the essential job functions with or without the assistance of reasonable accommodation as determined on a case by case basis.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk and/or hear. This job may require a quick response when on call, so the candidate needs to be able to walk for a significant distance or for a long period of time (several hours) without assistance. They are also required to stand and walk.The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
