Job Purpose

The Safety Engineer applies their scientific and practical knowledge of the Safety compliance field in order to lead a team of safety professionals that innovate, design, and improve systems, processes, equipment, and tools to improve the Safety characteristics in alignment with daily operations, new model, business plan, and/or innovation to achieve or exceed targets and promote safety excellence.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead Plant Safety themes and complex improvement projects.
  • Manage the daily operations of a team of Safety Professionals and mentor direct reports. Foster the technical expertise and professional skills of direct reports
  • Leverage Safety expertise to proactively cycle PDCA to reduce injuries and hazards and ensure continuous improvement of safety characteristics of assigned areas
  • Accurately interpret and apply the Honda Safety Management manual including NA and HDMA policies and procedures. Participate in PDCA of policies and procedures based on technical expertise
  • Perform and document complex safety compliance activity including risk assessments, ergonomic studies, and process and equipment innovation.
  • Detailed presentation and reporting of safety activities and results including complex data analysis and trending
  • Develop personal technical expertise and professional skills

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Occupational Safety and Health, or other ABET-certified safety and health program or equivalent related experience
  • 7-12 years of safety experience or equivalent Honda manufacturing experience
  • Achievement of professional certification such as Advanced Safety Certificate, Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician, Certified Safety Professional, Safety Management Specialist.
  • Interpersonal relationship skills
  • Detailed understanding of major health and safety regulations and injury/illness prevention strategies
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of the organization
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience using Microsoft Office products
  • Strong planning and prioritization skills
  • Advanced data analysis and problem-solving skills
  • Complex understanding of business plan, budgeting and cost reporting.
  • Expertise with root cause analysis and implementation of countermeasures

Workstyle

  • Open office environment
  • Manufacturing environment (for Manufacturing Management Center assignments)
  • Overtime, holiday and weekend work possible (needs will vary)
  • Able to work varying/rotating shifts for extended periods of time if requested
  • Minimal travel requirements (<5%) with overnight stay
